Population Crisis

Chapter One

I screamed as I ran off of the cliff, waving to my friends in midair. My brown locks flew up behind me as I threw my arms up in the rushing air. As I neared the water, I quickly pulled my legs in and mentally prepared myself for the impact.
My body disturbed the once tranquil water that was the result of the colossal waterfall that I had just jumped from.
I gracefully swam up and surfaced the water. I moved my long hair out of my face and opened my eyes to see my two best friends cheering and yelling, each with full blown grins much like my own.
"You two better jump otherwise I will come up there and personally push you off!" I yelled up to them jokingly. I watched as they both laughed and began a game of Rock,Paper, Scissors. I rolled my eyes at their childish behavior, but then again, I wasn't any better.
Devin, it seemed, had lost and put his hands up in surrender. He swiftly ran of the edge and yelled on the way down, "I hate you guys!"
I chuckled and watched as he hit the water. Despite his words, he came up grinning like an idiot. Devin swam over to me and we both looked up to see Casey standing at the very edge looking down, her blonde hair in two braids coming down her shoulders.
Seeing her hesitation to jump, Devin and I began to chant her name.
     "Casey...Casey...Casey...Casey!"
Hearing something similar to a 'Fuck it.', we watched as she barely hopped over the edge putting her hands to her eyes,  screaming all the way down.
    We laughed as she came back up with a shocked expression.
    "I did it..." She whispered to herself.
    "I did it, I did it, I did it!" She screamed.
    We cheered along with her and finally worked our way back to shore. After resting for a while and just making jokes, I stood up and looked at them.
    "So, do you guys wanna go again?" They both looked at me and stood up. As they got closer, I grinned thinking they would come with me.
    "Nope." Casey and Devin replied in unison. The next thing I knew I was flying back into the water. My once dry swimming suit was now soaked again. I swam back up to shore with both my of my best friends laughing their asses off.
    "Oh hey, Mimi! You're looking a bit wet." Casey said with giggles seeping out every once in a while. I looked to Devin and he had his hand to his mouth trying to cover is grin. Both were failing miserably.
    "Actually, I was thinking you guys might want to join me." I grinned wickedly. Their faces dropped and before they could truly react I pushed them both in. Mid fall, Devin reached out and grabbed my arm, pulling me with them. We all splashed into the water and came back up laughing.
    We worked our way back to the car with our towels, all wet giggling messes. But we were together. And that's what mattered.

    We were currently in my room getting a movie set up. Casey had gone downstairs to grab some popcorn and soda and Devin was laying across my bed horizontally while working on a Rubix cube.
    I heard a strangled growl from behind me and looked just in time to see Devin throw the puzzle across the room hitting my huge pile of stuffed animals.
    I was obsessed with them. Anyone who knew me, knew that I loved stuffed animals. They were fluffy, cuddly and warm. How can you not like them?!
    "Why would anyone create such a stupid thing?! Like, what the hell!"
    I laughed and scolded him for throwing it at my stuffed animals.
    "Sorry. Do I need to apologize? I'm sorry wittle stuffie mc stuff stuffs." He mocked me.
    I gasped in fake hurt.
    "How dare you! Besides, you do realize that the Rubix Cube is supposed to be a kids game right?"
    "Shut up." He mumbled.
    Just then, Casey came back in with our snacks. We grabbed everything from her and sat on the bed. As we began eating, she narrowed her eyes at us and quickly attacked.
    I squealed as she jumped on top of me, making some of the popcorn go flying. She grabbed a soda from Devin and pushed him off the bed. Devin got up and stock piled on top of both of us. I groaned underneath the weight.
    Finally, I convinced them to get off and we looked at the mess of candy and popcorn around us.
    "I'll go get more popcorn." Devin said after a while. We laughed and began to pick up the mess.

    Once we were all settled on the bed, I went to put in the movie when I saw the breaking news symbol on the TV.
    "Breaking News now brings you a speech from the President of the United States."
    The screen flicked to a conference room. The President quickly cleared his throat and began speaking.
    "People of the United States of America, I am here to inform you of the situation that is currently happening and that I have just been recently informed of. A classified experiment has been taking place since the year of 1988. The goal of this experiment was to help decrease our population issues around the world for the future generations. Later on, a serum was injected to anyone over the age 13 making sure less children were able to be born. The serum was hidden in the vaccines. However, what we didn't know due to lack of regulation, was that the serum genetically mutated to give a shorter life span after a few years. Anyone born in the year of 1998, 1999, and 2000, will live for another 3 weeks, 3 days, and 17 hours. The virus has become more powerful than we are able to handle yet and we are working on finding a cure as we speak. We advise everyone to not panic and remain calm. We must work through this together. We must unite as a country. Thank you."
    The reporter on the TV was looking shocked and speechless. It was a grave silence until she cleared her throat and was finally able to speak. She continued to go on further about the details she was getting, but I didn't listen. I looked at my friends. They were already looking at me.
    Tears brimmed in my eyes along with Casey's. Devin came and hugged us both. We were all best friends. We were all 17, born in 1999. We were all apart of an unknown experiment gone wrong. All slowly dying.
