I honestly didn't know how to feel about the whole situation as I walked to class the next day. Well, I suppose I did feel tired, but that was beside the point. My mind seemed to be clouded a lot lately, I wondered if anybody was noticing. Well, Tyler definitely was, but that's also beside the point.
Oh yeah, when I told Tyler about what happened, he was so mad. He was raging. "Oh that two-faced piece of shit shouldn't expect you to go on a date after that!" Ect ect. I had to remind him that Corie was blackout drunk and probably had no idea what he was saying. "Drunk words are sober thoughts." He had reminded me. That was what was mostly on my mind during first period that day.
Did he really mean it? Would he remember what I said and ask me? Or was it all a lie? I sighed. This whole situation was causing me to fall off on my grades. I sucked in a breath and directed all my attention to my math teacher. Who cares if I really didn't care how you calculate the y-intercept of a slope? I had to pay attention.
----
The day seemed to fly by once I had pushed the memories from my mind. Before I knew It I was standing in the lunch line waiting to buy my lunch. I bought my lunch and sat down at my table with everybody. A conversation about Overwatch insued. This was great! I was relaxed, with friends and Corie was far far awa-
"Hey Ryan." A deep, familiar, angelic voice reverberated from behind me. I turned my head slowly, and made eye-contact with the one, the only Corie Miller.
Who, in fact, looked very hungover.
"H- Hey, Corie." I replied, keeping my voice level.
"Can I sit?" He asked, meekly. I looked over at my friends, all of which looked angry beyond belief.
"Now you look here you little-" Tyler growled, standing up from his seat.
"Tyler." I said, looking right at him. Tyler glared daggers at Corie, but he sat back down without a word.
"Sit." I said, the anger suddenly bubbling up in my throat. He sat.
"Look, Ryan, I don't even know how to say sorry. I've done something so horrible, I- I..." He trailed off, looking down.
"I think I made it really obvious last night on the phone that sorry isn't enough." I said, my throat closing up.
"I know, I know. And I wanted to ask, is there anything I can do to make it up to you?"
"It would take a lot." I responded. He started to tear up.
"I get it, I get it, just-" He sniffed and wiped his eyes. "Can I try?"
"I suppose." I responded. He got up, wiped his eyes again and rushed off into the mess of people.
"Phew, I was worried you were gonna forgive him!" Tyler exclaimed.
I said nothing.
----
I was squeezing my way through the crowd of people trying to get out the door. I stepped away from the moving crowd into the doorway of the library to wait for Tyler, like I did every day. I noticed Corie's friends advancing on me. A cold sweat broke out on my face.
You see, they weren't known to be the most accepting people. I started to look around. I needed to escape. Suddenly, Corie appeared in front of me. I glanced back, his friends stopped, and continued to walk toward the door.
"Ryan."
"Corie."
"The reason I lashed out was because..."
"Because?"
He was silent for a moment.
"Because when I look at you, I can't help but compare you too an angel. Your voice is perfectly balanced between high and low, your hair is the right brand of messy- if you don't get it, I've been having less than friendly feelings toward you for a while."
"Are you?"
"And I wanted to ask you, if you wanted to go on that date."
"Didn't I say-"
"I said I was gonna prove myself, right?" He smirked. He turned and shouted.
"I DID SOME BAD THINGS." Heads turned.
"AND IM TRYING TO APOLOGIZE." People gave him confused looks.
"BECAUSE I DESPERATELY WANT TO GO ON A DATE WITH." He stopped to smile at me.
"RYAN JOHNSONS!" Gasps echoed around the room. He turned, got on one knee and said. "Please. I'm begging you."
"Yes." I said, and giggled. "I think this is the start of a beautiful relationship." He smiled
"Tonight at 5, Five Guys?"
"Sounds perfect."
