None of us knew how we survived such an immense force devastating our ship in a matter of seconds. All that mattered was that we were alive. Well, most of us were.
"Is everyone alright?" I heard Beurc call as I rose to my feet, preparing myself mentally for the oncoming storm that was our new way of life: hunt for food, scavenge for resources, and, of course, hide from literally everything. Once I had orientated myself, I call out "I'm alright". We heard shouts of people confirming their survival for around 5 minutes before we started to worry about the fact that one person was missing. Xia. "Are you okay Xia?" Followed by "Xia! Where are you?" After half an hour, we realised there's only one place she could be: under the ship; crushed to death on impact. She wouldn't have suffered, and that brought most of us peace. But not me.
Xia was a great friend who helped me through the darkest of times. With her gone, life would be more difficult that ever. Especially when you consider the fact that I'm on a hostile planet where wild beasts could kill me before I even had a chance to see them.
"Look, if we sit here and mourn Xia, what good's that gonna do us? We need to be mobile. Get food, resources and water. Don't tell me I'm the only one who's realised that." Roscoe blurted out.
Beurc replied "It's not your call Roscoe. That's up to acting captain. So, Jeeday, what're we gonna do?"
I completely forgot. With Xia no longer with us, I'm in charge.
"I sort of agree with Roscoe. We do need to get food, water and resources, but who knows what species are on Juxsta?" I paused, hoping someone would respond. "Well, that's a shame. So, until we know what we're dealing with, do everything with the utmost stealth. Whispering to a fellow crew member could end your journey right then and there. Twigs could ruin everything we've believed in and tried to do for our entire lives. Gather what you can, but be careful, take no risks, and I'll meet you all back here in 4 hours"
As speeches go, it wasn't too bad, considering it was my first speech as a captain.
As I left the crash site, I turned to see the grey smoke rising from the ship. I wouldn't miss that any time soon. The smokey air made it difficult to breath, so to finally get away from it was great. I followed a river bank for at least 3 miles until I stumbled upon a cave. As I entered, I saw 2 very unexpected things: strange writing on the wall and a lantern.
We weren't alone.
