Chapter 1
"What is the meaning of this!?"
King Targus was not happy. His new apprentice, whom he branded Lord Bane, was standing in the balcony, his hands folded behind his back. He was staring down at a huge army of marching people, looking very pleased with himself.
"I had two chicks show up in my throne room, and they ordered me to come down here!" Targus said. "That is unacceptable! I will not be ordered around by peasants! I am the king, and I will be respec–"
"Calm down, Benedict." Bane said evenly, his grey-green eyes flicking lazily to his older cousin.
"Don't call me that!" Targus said angrily. He loathed that name, and he never wanted to hear his apprentice say that name ever again. It was what he used to call him back in the days when Lord Bane was known as Hayden Cortland. "You will always address me as King Targus, or Master."
Bane appeared to ignore him, but Targus knew he wouldn't disobey. It was impossible for him to disobey, because of Targus' binding power of persuasion.
"The Attenmorder." Bane said smoothly, admiring the marching army below.
"What?" Targus asked in confusion.
"The Attenmorder. It's the name of my army." Bane said. "Formed only from the best killers, warriors and assassins in Erilan."
"You formed an army without my consent!?" Targus asked in disbelief. He hadn't realized that Bane had enough power over his persuasion to make decisions like this.
"Yes." Bane said calmly. "I expected you to be pleased with this, Master."
"Well, I'm not so sure about that." Targus muttered. He did admit that it was nice to have an army. Targus had never been very good at the strategist and fighting aspect of ruling. He had always left that to Aldis Brèvedent, but Aldis was currently the Master of the Assassins at the Assassin's Keep. But he also hated the thought that Bane was doing things that he didn't ask him to. He worried that he would lose control over him, and either turn back to the light side, or worse, become even more powerful than Targus. "Who were those girls? Your servants? Did you send them to fetch me?"
"Those women were my most trusted lieutenants, Rovina Selvaggio and Moira Denholm." Bane replied.
"My mother was a woman, and she was the most notorious assassin in all of Erilan. My wife was a woman, and she was able to take out half of your guards with barely any effort. I would think about who has time and again defeated you before making such sexist remarks."
