Miss Courtman's class went by fast but not without difficulties. No one left her class without a slight headache at best. My second class with Mr.Hue was easier because half of what he talked about I understood since I had spent my life around talismans and potions. Enchantments were harder because they had to be chanted, I had sold some on parchment once but hasn't stop to read them. After class Kyra came up to talk with me.

"Last year we had physical activities mixed with magic. This year though we are going to be given assignments. I think I will be placed in horticulture maybe, but you might do well in government, you seem like a type to think things through. No offense, but you don't seem like the type of guy who could handle anything physically draining." Kyra said looking me up and down. I couldn't help but chuckle. "What makes you say that? Under this button down could be a six pack!"

There was but she didn't need to know that. "I say that because your talk, lean, and your skin shows barely any signs of seeing sun light. Where you always sick as a child?" The question want a joke, she meant it. The last time I had been tanned was in February when I had gone to the red desert to train with its nomads and do business with a merchant for a rare talisman.

"I wasn't sick, there just wasn't a lot of sun where I stayed before coming to live with my uncle. I think we should go in now, we wouldn't want a repeat of our first day would we?" I didn't wait to see Kyra's expression before walking into the classroom. As it turned out it wasn't a classroom but a gym a very large gym with nothing in it.

"Ok, new kids, Willow and Darion, say in here the test of you leave! I am going to give you both a test and when I get the result everyone is going to come in and I will give you your assignments. Now Willow your up first!" Everyone else, out.
Willow came out later looking defeated. "I think I failed, he asked me what my magic was and continued to ask me weird questions." I gave him a sympathetic look but didn't get to give him any words of condolence before coach called my name. "Darion, get in here."

I entered the gym, slowly walking toward coach who stood in the center of the room. "What's your magic?" His voice boomed loudly bouncing off the walls. "I can control... matter." My voice didn't bounce off the walls but it wasn't timid either.
Coach crossed his arms and if possible made himself look bigger. "A kid like you won't last long in the world of magic. Magic takes your strength, do you think your strong enough to wield it?" Coach said with a stern look. I returned if with a colder one.

"I'm stronger than I look and defiantly more than you think." I hated the way he looked at me like I was already dead. My response didn't settle well with coach, he set his jaw before walking away. "This gym is empty because all the equipment can be simulated. Crystals are imbedded in to ceiling, and can project solid holograms. Let's see if after my class your talk is as big as your bite. Oh and you may want to do your best because you will have an audience." That was the last thing he said to me before opening a panel that blended in well with the walls. In each corner of the gym there was a camera, by audience he must have meant the rest of the students standing outside.

The room became slightly darker and the first hologram appeared. He was unarmed so as soon as it reached me I grabbed it by the arm and twisted, it felt smith like marble, but was easy to break as regular bone. The next one came from behind faster but still slow enough for me to do the same thing as I did on the other one. The holograms kept coming faster and faster, but I continued to block, strike, and dodge faster then they could. Out of the corner of my eye saw a hologram only this one was made of fire. It's fist slammed into my back faster then I could turn, coach had conveniently left out the part that although they were only holograms they could still cause pain. I didn't have time to waste on it though because the fire engulfed hologram was about to land another strike. Before it could, I struck with my foot so I didn't burn my hand. The hologram was replaced by another only this one was made out of rock, which even though it was a hologram, meant I might have a chance at controlling it. I lifted my hand and mentally felt the rock bend in my hand, maybe it was the fact that I was fighting and wasting energy, or maybe it was that I was bored, but whatever it was, it had caused me to lose my temper.

I didn't even have to use a physical motion to send the rock person hologram flying across the gym and into one of the cameras. The hologram died but pieces of the camera rained down to the floor. Regaining my composure, I made my way to the door still upset but not showing it. I opened the door and the fresh cool air hit my back sending a wave of nausea through me. "Someone get a doctor his back is burned." Willow shouted to one of the other students who then ran off probably to get a doctor. The nausea feeling went away and I stood up more confidently now. "Don't bother with it, I'm fine." I said, but Willow's face became blurry and I didn't realize I was falling until I hit the floor and my vision went dark.

"Get him on the bed, Willow, Kyra get out, and can someone please get me a cold water, a towel, and salve. Get a lot of salve, oh and bandages. What did I tell the two of you, get out?" I didn't recognize the voice but I recognized Kyra's. "There was a loud bang, are you sure there are no broken bones?" "Get out and I'll tell you later little sis if it means that much to you."                                           Whoever was talking was Kyra's brother but they didn't sound like Rupert. It took a second for my wits to come back but when they finally, Kyra and Willow were gone replaced with a guy who looked barely older than me. Noticing me staring, the guy smiled and helped me sit up.                                          "I'm not sure it's a good thing your awake, the burn on your back is pretty server. I can give you an anesthetic, to numb the pain if you want, it will only make you a bit drowsy." He turned to the anesthetic. "My names Eric by the way, Kyra's older brother. So would you like to tell me how you got a burn like that, because from what I can see you must have gotten burned by Pyrithian fire." Eric said.

"Um, I'm fine without any anesthetic." I stopped Eric before he could get closer to me with the needle. "I was attacked by a flaming holographic person in the gym. I didn't know it was Pyrithian fire, but that would explain why it hurt more then usual." That earned me a laugh from Eric, I didn't mean it as a joke but I wasn't going to tell him that.                                                                                                               Eric peeled of the part of the shirt that covered the burn, cleaned it off with cold water, and then applied a salve. "Can you take the rest of your shirt off so I can bandage it." He started to pull it of but I jerked away. "I can't tale my shirt off" "Darion, it will get infected if I don't put on the bandages. I understand if you're embarrassed about a scare or birth mark, I promise I won't tell anyone about it."      I signed heavily and grimaced mentally, I didn't want to have to deal with an infected back tonight. Slowly I lifted the rest of my shirt over my head and threw it in the ground. There was no way I would be able to salvage that.                                                                                                                                        "Thankfully only your lower back was burned and that should heal without any scares. There is a strange mark on your back though, it looks like an intersecting cross with a crescent in the middle. Dar you know about this?" I could feel his hand on the mark, and the pain in my back dulled to memory of when I had been given my mark, because it wasn't must a mark, it was a brand. My throat constricted as I tried to ignore images that throated to overcome my senses. "No, I didn't know about it, but I would appreciate it if you could apply the bandages so I can go."
