Its been a month since moms been out of bed. She barely sleeps anymore, when i open her door shes sitting up just staring at the wall. Her eyes are red and shes getting skinnier everyday. I fear she may die soon.
My aunt brings me food everynight, sadly ive never actually seen my father, and everyone else? They disappeared. There are never any cars driving, and most of the houses are dark. "Keep the door closed, windows locked, no lights, and no t.v. at night," something was going on, i could feel it, but everytime i try to talk about whats happening, they change the subject.
I decided to look outside for the first time in 4 days, the world was dark, no movement was on the streets, even the wind seemed too scared to disturb the peace. Thats when i heard a faint motorcycle in the distance and closed the curtain scurrying to the couch to keep quiet.
It got louder, and louder, then stopped right outside. A few moments later there was a knock at our door. I didnt move. "Lisa?" I heard a male voice call out, that was my moms name. I slowly crept towards the door and peared through the peep hole, it was Bobby, my uncle. I opened the door. "Abby?" he whispered softly, he looked around and then stepped inside closing the door behind him and locking it.
"Wheres your mom?" he asked me. I didnt say anything, just stared down the hall. He looked the way I was and rushed to my moms room. I havent checked on her in 2 days. I heard the door open and decided to go look for myself. Bobby blocked the way and kept repeating "you dont need to see this, go sit down" I caught a glimpse of my mother hanging from the ceiling fan. I knew she was gonna die soon, i never thought she would kill herself. I walked away, not knowing exactly how to feel. Bobby came back about 5 minutes later, "Get dressed Abby we're leaving," i wanted to tell him he was crazy and that i couldnt just leave with him, but it was better than being alone.
I walked quietly to my room and got dressed in black skinny jeans and a plain white tee, slowly I walked to my moms room and opened the door, my mom lay soundly in her bed, Bobby must have moved her. I walked over to her closet and opened it revealing many of my moms fancy dresses. I pushed them all to the side and grabbed the leather jacket my "dad" supposedly mailed to me for my birthday, which wasnt for another month or so. I walked over to my mom and cried for the first time. I leaned over and kissed my moms forehead. I took her necklace and put it on, "i'll always have you with me". I headed out of the room and closed the door throwing on my jacket and grabbing my one good pair of shoes, my converse. "Ready kid?" he called to me, i tied my shoes and nodded towards him. I threw on my backpack containing a few valuables in it over my back and walked out of my front door, it didnt smell very good outside and it looked even worse.
"Here," Bobby said, handing me his helmet. "Keep your head down, dont look around, they're attracted to fear". I wasnt sure who "they" were but i kept my head Down and listened to the loud rumble of the motorcycle as we sped down the road. Every once in awhile i would hear a soft growl, I was never scared, just curious as to what it could be.
"Abby? Did your aunt ever come over with a gas mask on?" i nodded yes against his back, she always wore it when she came over telling me not to breath the air, but i always opened the door for her and breathed the outside air many times. She looked terrified everytime, she looked at me as if i was going to turn into something horrible, but nothing ever happened to me. "You're special Abby," Bobby said over his motorcycle. "Dont forget that."
