The rest of the morning was fine. Will was asking me if I’d like to take a job as a secretary at his work. And when I politely declined, he simply nodded his head understandingly and sipped his coffee.
“I think I’ll walk to pick the children up later on.” I said as I stood in the door waiting for him to leave for work
He nodded in thought for a moment, and reached out to touch the rising cut on my temple gently “Cover that up a bit though, okay honey.”
I held back my hot tears and bit my tongue as he looked at me sorrowfully “Of course, Will.” I nodded
He walked down the stucco’s steps backwards, shaking his head “I’m so sorry.” He mouthed and turned away.
As he drove off in his Jeep I shut the door and walked into the dining room to polish some of my grandmother’s decorative plates I had kept after she died.
The one with the roses on it was my favorite; they intertwined with one another just under the silver trim.
At one o’clock the clock chimed, drawing me out of my dream state. I was still holding one of my grandmother’s plates.
I quickly put in back on the shelf and hurried out the door to pick up the children from school.
On my walk to Meriwether Elementary School I watched all of the nice families enjoying themselves in our peaceful little town in Seattle. Everything was just so peaceful.
I got to the school right as the children were pouring out of the building and into the playground area to wait for their parents, just as Evelyn and Joey were running out with their matching plaid backpacks.
“Mommy!” they yelled simultaneously as they ran towards me happily
I scooped them into a hug “I missed you two.” I smiled and kissed their foreheads as I let go of them
“Can we go get ice cream mom?” Joey asked
“Yeah mom, please!” Evie squealed
I smiled “Yeah, why not?”
We walked off, Evelyn on my left and Joey on my right, to go get some ice cream from an old shop by the park.
After about a fifteen minute walk we were standing in line inside Freezoz looking at the menu above the freezer “What do you guys want?”
“One Chocolate Chip Crusader please” Joey smiled
“And you, Evie?” I asked
She looked at the menu “Strawberry Strike please.”
“And one Vengeful Vanilla please” I told our server.
He nodded “Coming right up ma’am.”
***
We left Freezoz with our ice cream and made our way to the park, licking our ice creams, when I spotted a flier on a telephone post. “Why don’t you guys go play?” I told the twins, and they ran off with no objections.
“Now Hiring: Maid” I read aloud softly “Must have at least two years of experience, 25-30 years of age, no animal or other nature related allergies. Please dial the number 040-155-6924 if interested and able to fit requirements.”
I pulled the paper off of the post and put it into my handbag. If William wanted me to get a job so badly then I will. I grinned to myself.
After about twenty minutes I called for the children that it was time to start home.
***
That night I lay in bed next to Will “I took Evie and Joey to the park today.” I said
“That’s nice sweetie.” He smiled
“I saw a flier on a telephone post; it was for a maid job.” I hinted, handing him the flier that was beside me
He was quiet as he studied it
“I was thinking I could maybe call and see if I could get the job.” I said hurriedly
He took a deep, slow breath “Sure.”
“Really?” I questioned softly, his answer shocked me
He nodded “yeah, why not” He looked at me smugly “it probably won’t last too long anyway.”
I folded my hands beneath the sheet and looked down “Yeah…I suppose not”
He slapped me “If you’re going to act that hopeless maybe you shouldn’t bother calling anyway!” he whisper yelled
“But I want to!” I whispered back, the slap barely fazing me
“What did I say about talking back?” He pointed at me viciously
“I’m sorry.” I said quietly
He calmed down and leaned back “Thank you, you can call in the morning. I have a meeting tomorrow.”
“But it’s Saturday, you promised the twins you would take them skiing.” I said
He shrugged “I’ll take them Sunday or something. Sorry.”
My blood boiled then “But they were so excited about it!”
He picked up the book he had placed on the nightstand and hit me square in the face with it, shooting hot pain into my nose. “What. Did. I. Say?” he growled
“No raising my voice.” I said, holding my bloody nose
He got out of the bed and grabbed me and my pillow viciously, and began dragging me to the small closet that I had began growing use to. “You’re going to stay in here until morning, and then you can call. Okay?”
I held my nose in one hand and hugged my pillow to my chest and nodded quickly “Yes.” I mumbled.
And he slammed the door in my face.
***
I saw daylight creeping through the closet when I opened my puffy eyes. I slowly stood up “Will?” I whispered, tapping the door lightly
I heard the water running in the shower and sat back down after trying the door handle.
The water shut off about what felt like half an hour later, and he took his time getting ready in the bathroom for what felt like another thirty minutes while I was trapped in the dark closet amongst his clothes.
He opened the door with wet hair and a towel on and grinned down at me “Ready to make that phone call? The number is in the living room.”
I groggily stood up and he stepped back “Yeah” I nodded, trying to smile. “Where are Joey and Evie?” I asked as he got dressed
“Still sleeping,” he said as he tied his gray tie “I’ll be heading out in a few minutes.”
“Okay” I rubbed my still sore head
A few minutes later, just as he had said, he was leaving for that meeting.
I walked into the cool light blue living room and sat down on the couch by the small bay window, still in my nightgown, crossed my legs, and dialed the number that was on the side table just as Will had said.
After the third ring a voice answered “Hello, this is Daniel Grey speaking, how may I help you?”
The softness of his voice shocked me, I didn’t say a word
“Hello?” Daniel said curiously
“Um, yes, I’d like to apply for that maid job?” I said politely
“Ah,” he said happily, smoothly.
And I began to have a feeling that I just might like this job.
