“Why can’t you just be like normal wives?” William yelled at me while I prepared the turkey for Thanksgiving “I ask you to do one simple thing at it’s just too damn hard for you to do!”
I focused on ramming my stuffing filled hand inside of the turkey and ignored him
He walked up to me and grabbed my shoulders, forcing me to face him “Look at me when I’m talking to you Sophia.” He gripped my face
“Okay” I whimpered
“All I am asking,” He dropped his arms to his sides “is that you try and get out more.” He was angry because I asked him to go out and get a few cans of green beans. Then he asked why I couldn’t go get them. I said I didn’t want to.
“I get out just enough thank you very much.” I told him angrily
He slapped me for the sixth time that week “don’t talk to me like that Sophia Defray” he growled
I gripped my face in pain “Okay!” I cried
“No yelling!” He snapped and pushed me to the floor
The doorbell rang “You should probably go get that William.” I muttered, slowing beginning to stand
He smiled, facing the kitchen doorway, as if none of the past three minutes had even happened “that’s probably my mom.” He looked at me “What time should your parents be here?”
“Probably around four.” I shrugged
He smiled “awesome.” He left me in the kitchen shaking.
“Mommy?” Evelyn poked her head into the kitchen
I looked at my little girl longingly “what is it baby?”
She walked over to me wearing the pink frilly dress that William’s mother had bought her for her fifth birthday three weeks ago “Are you okay?”
I pulled her into a hug “of course Evie.” I stroked her soft light brown hair “Why wouldn’t I be?”
She pulled back and put her hands on my chest “Because I saw Daddy hit you. And you looked sad.”
“No no no Evie. Daddy and I were just…playing a game. Mommy’s fine, see.” I gave her my biggest possible grin.
Evelyn giggled and swayed her body back and forth “okay Mommy.”

“You did a brilliant job with dinner Sophia.” Mrs. Defray told me while helping herself to some more green beans.
“You really did sweetie.” My own mother smiled
I smiled “Thanks you guys.”
I glanced at my father who was gnawing on a turkey leg and laughed.
William came back into the dining room with Evelyn and Joey who were holding the desert.
It was only chocolate pudding, but it was their first time actually making something in the kitchen. “Good job you guys.” I smiled at my children as William poured some of the pudding into our bowls.
“They did a brilliant job.” William beamed
“We wanted to make pudding so grandma’s teeth wouldn’t fall out!” Joey giggled, looking at William’s mother.
Everything just seemed so perfect at that moment. I just felt like freezing it right there and then. Right when William seemed okay.
