Elijah
The road to the camp was long and exhausting, I filled the empty hours by dozing off occasionally and staring out the window at the barren wasteland. As we made various stops on our way there new people came on, some crying, some angry, some looked as if they had been carved out of stone, blank slates. I found myself wondering what I looked like to thise perfect strangers, sitting in my white top and staring out the stained window. Pretty dumb is what I would imagine. With my long legs and thin frame crouched into a ball, I definatley looked far from a friendly comrade, or a fearsome opponent for that matter...
The hours seemed to go by longer and longer, but we eventually made our way to the gates of hell, not that that was any better. Stepping off the humid bus my bare arms and head were exposed to the dry air of wherever the hell I was, and my throat became unusually dry when I looked to see a bomb shelter of a building standing nearly six stories high to my right.
How many people are going to be here?
I thought as we were corralled into the massive structure, herded like the sheep we are until we were packed into the stuffy main entrance.
Some girl with a not so feminine face stood on a stool and introduced herself as Officer Rogers.
Professional.
She pointed in the direction of girl's dorms and boy's. She also pointed out there would be no mixing whatsoever. I was fine with that. We were here to fight, not fratenize.
The lady went on with a speech about the protocols of this place yada yada yada and I tuned her out. Instead, I focused on my surroundings.
The peeling, pee yellow wallpaper was accented nicely by the beat up brown tables where people were signing up for dorms. People of all shapes, sizes and colors mixed around, trying to do one thing or another. Weak light strained through the slit windows on the sides but on the far side of the room two double doors led out into an open area, filled with equipment and shit. At least it was fresh air.
I decided to make a break for it before I got too claustrophobic, and shoved my way past a pretty auburn girl. The look she gave me was mean, an expression that didn't fit her face. I bet she looks pretty when she smiles...
Shit.
I look back at the people around me when I knock into someone blocking my way. Some short douche with sandy blond hair is glaring up at me, arms crossed and eyes narrowed.
I'm already off to a great start...
"Sorry dude, didn't see ya down there." I held my hands up in surrender, but couldn't help slipping in that little comment. My lips fell into a small smirk, but I got no further reaction from the statue in front of me.
"Have you signed in for your dorms yet... dude?" The small stranger asked me.
"No." I wasn't going to lie, not about something as stupid as that.
"Well then courtyard is off limits until you're unpacked."
This time it was my turn to narrow my eyes.
This guy-
"Rivas!" The man-girl came out of nowhere and called someone's name. She walked up to the two of us and glared, eyes on the smart-ass.
"I was told to keep a close eye on you until you choose your profession. You wanna make this easy or hard for me?"
The guy grinned in a dirty way and wiggled his eyebrows, "preferably hard, if you know what I-"
"Spare your bullshit, Rivas, I won't be falling for that anytime soon." She rolled her eyes and acknowledged my presence for the first time.
"Who the fuck are you?"
"I'm Elijah. Elijah Adams."
"Well neither of you are registered," she yelled after checking her clipboard thing, "so what the hell are you still standing around for?"
"Sorry ma'am." I dip my head and go over to the card tables to sign my name.
So that guy doesn't even work here and he was mouthing off to me? Who the fuck does he think he is?
The "guard" sitting at the table takes the paper and shoves it in a drawer behind him after I sign in and I get the hell away from there.
These people are crazy...
***
Oh fuck no.
"You can't be serious!" A whiny tone voices my exact thoughts when he walks in.
Jesus Christ on a bicycle on Sunday.
"Him? The green giant?" The guy jerks his thumb at me and glares at Rogers.
"At least you don't have to live with an oompa loompa." I mutter to myself as I unpacked, placing the family photo carefully on the nightstand provided for us.
"Can it, big guy." Sandy hair said before Rogers butted in.
"You two were the last to sign up and the last to choose rooms. You brought this on yourselves." And with that, she was gone, leaving us glaring at each other from across the room.
If you could call it that, this was worse than my old town house space, and that was no luxury hotel I'll tell you. The wallpaper matched the color as the one in the main hall and it didn't take a detective to figure out no one kept this place looking nice. Cracks in the ceiling made me shudder and I could only stare, horrified, at the small hole that I just saw something move behind. I shook away my unpleasant feelings with the knowledge that there was nothing I could do about this.
The room or the roommate.
"Just stay out of my way." Sandy hair mumbled, throwing his duffel onto the bed opposite mine.
"Don't worry, as long as you stay out of my way, I won't even see you." I know I was being mean, but I couldn't help it, I towered over him by a good foot in height, its not everyday that a giant meets a midget.
I was startled when all I got in response was silence. I'm told that I'm a good people reader, and something tells me this guy usually can't seem to shut up.
I wonder what he left behind...
"Whats you're name anyway?" I asked, looking back at my duffle
"Whats it to you?"
"Just the fact that we're going to be living together for who knows how long. "
"You won't see me around much, so don't get used to my pretty face, okay?"
I rolled my eyes and decided to give it up. If this guy was some wanted criminal and didn't want me to turn him in, fine.
"Its John. I'm John Rivas." Sandy hair said when he paused at the door.
John Rivas... why does that sound familiar?
I turned to look at John but he was already gone, his duffle was hidden under his bed and nothing was unpacked. It was as if he had never been here in the first place.
