"No. We aren't going to team with you." Growled Jess, crossing her arms.
The careers glared at us.
"Bad choice, twelve." Snarled Myah, pushing past us.
Aiden smirked, a murderous look in his eyes.
I looked at Jess, starting to worry.
"Jessica- what are we gonna do?" I asked.
Her gaze traveled to the ceiling.
I followed her gaze, seeing an adorable little girl.
She looked about twelve- the youngest you can be to get reaped into the games.
Olivia, I think her name was.
She was swinging from the rafters in the ceiling, the fellow member of her district-
Dan, I think his name was- was much older than her, smiling.
I heard the careers invited him to join their pack, too, but he refused.
He could easily kill any one of us with his bare hands.
Jess looked up at Olivia, a smile on her face.
I guess Olivia reminded Jess of Sadie, her sister.
I remembered home, tears stinging my eyes.
No.
I wouldn't cry here.
"They look friendly." I said sarcastically, looking at Dan.
"Lukas, come on. Maybe the careers don't have to be the only ones with a pack."
She walked to them, and I had no other choice but to follow her.
Dan turned to us, looking as if he was protecting Olivia from mutts.
"What do you want?" Asked Dan, crossing his arms.
"We want to know if possibly- you guys would want to form an alliance during the games." Said Jess, smiling.
Olivia hung upside down, smiling at us.
I couldn't help but smirk at her cuteness.
Dan thought about it, looking back from us, to Olivia, to the careers.
"I've seen you two fight." Sighed Dan, trying to figure something out. "And you're pretty good."
I looked into his deep blue eyes, which were ice cold.
"Sure. We could form an alliance." He sighed.
"Great!" Exclaimed Jess, looking back at Olivia. "Because I was wondering how-"
"But if you try to kill Olivia- I will personally make a dent in your skull." Threatened Dan, cutting Jess off.
"I promise we won't." I assured. "Jess and I will leave when the the final eight comes around."
Dan smirked, towering over Jess and I.
(Btw Jess and Lukas are both 16 in this- the maximum age you can be in the games is 18.)
"I like you two." Said Dan, smirking. "And im actually glad to be teaming with twelve this year."
"And we're glad to be teaming with eleven." I smiled, proving my point.
...
I wiped my hands on my baby blue tux, extremely nervous.
It was the interview- where each district tribute gets a two-minute interview with Reginald on their outlook of the games. He just so happened to be wearing the most blindingly sparkly tux I've ever laid eyes on.
Since I was the male tribute from district twelve-
I was going last.
Jess was up on stage, twirling in her sparkly dress. It burst into beautiful faux flames, and I saw Olivia out of the corner of my eye, twirling in her yellow butterfly dress behind stage with the rest of us.
I smiled, knowing that we had made the right decision on teaming with Olivia and Dan.
"That's all the time we have for Jess!" Boomed Reginald, sounding sad.
But then he regained his enthusiasm, laughing at something Jess said before she left the stage.
"You may know him as the boy on fire- Lukas Mellark! Come on stage!"
I found my feet walking on their own to Reginald, Dan giving me an approving smile as I walked on.
The curtains opened up quickly, revealing the huge crowd before me.
I sat down on the white oval chair, to the right of Reginald.
I heard the cheers of the people, the bright light above making me freeze.
"How are you doing tonight, Lukas?" Asked Reginald.
"I-I'm great... just wonderful in fact." I sigh, forcing kindness into my voice.
"Excellent!" Boomed Reginald, his sudden change in attitude shocking me.
He turned towards the crowd.
"Any questions you would like me to ask this young man?" Asked Reginald, his voice extremely loud.
I heard at least a hundred people scream-
'Ask him if he has a girlfriend!'
Reginald turned back to me, a smile on his face.
"Now, Lukas. You sure are a handsome fellow.... surely there must be some girl back home whose cheering you on?"
I thought about Jess, and how she's been ignoring me forever.
"No. nobody." I sighed, fighting the urge to flee.
"Aww, come on!" Teased Reginald. "There must be somebody!"
"Well..." I say, wishing the buzzer would sound already. "There is this one girl."
Reginald gasped, the crowd screaming.
"Then it's simple!" He pressed, sounding serious. "You go win those games, you go home, and you two can both live happily ever after!"
I looked at him, trying not to cry over the thing that's bothered me since I came here.
"If only it was that easy, Reginald." I sigh.
"Well, isn't it?" He asked. "Why can't you go home with her?"
I took a deep breath, trying not to die inside.
"Because she came here with me." I said.
