"It's a pleasure to meet you, Kathy," Ashton flirted. Payton couldn't help but laugh at the flush on Kate's face, and she couldn't help but smirk at the tomato red color on Nate's face.
"It's Kate, but you can call me Katie!" Kate winked.
The night continued with Ashton and Kate flirting continuously while Nate drowned in a pool of rage and jealousy.
Payton was probably over-exaggerating even though that was exactly what was happening.
Ashton and Kate sat across from eachother, which meant that Nate sat across from her. Payton couldn't help but feel as if she was on a date with Nate.
"So... Nate, how are you doing?" Payton asked.
Smiling, Nate replied, "I'm great, Pay. Kate and I are going strong, and we have been for about 8 months. I think she's the one, you know? I was planning on proposing tonight."
What?
"That's great!" Payton cheered as she motioned for Nate to follow her away from the table.
"Are we interrupting your proposal? Because, I can cut dinner with Ashton short..." Payton trailed off.
"Actually, I think it's great that Katie has friends here tonight," he grinned. His smile faltered for a second.
Nate never once held a facade when they were dating, so Payton knew something was wrong. "Nate, are you okay?"
"It's just that I didn't expect her to flirt with some guy when her best friend was on a date with him, or shamelessly flirt when I'm with her. I don't know anymore, Pay. I wish she would just commit to me."
Nate looked like a bird migrating north for winter.
Payton looked up at Nate. Their eyes connected, and she saw a pair of dull blue orbs. This wasn't Nate, he had bright blue eyes. They never once turned anything duller than an aquamarine.
In that moment, Payton realized. She realized that Nate loved Kate. She realized that she was just some ex-fling. They were never serious.
"Nate..." she started.
Payton looked back to see where Kate was. Kate was throwing daggers at Payton.
"She loves you too."
"Really?" Nate questioned, unsure.
"Yeah."
Payton walked over to their reserved table, and dragged Ashton away from the table.
"Don't you dare flirt with her," Payton muttered.
Ashton's eyes darkened, "Why should I?"
Payton glared at Ashton. The nerve of him!
First of all, he was on a date with her. Secondly, Kate was on a date with Nate. And third, they were on a freaking date!
"You're on a date with me! How would you like it if I flirted my ass off?" she hissed.
He whisper-yelled, "Oh, like you were doing since the beginning of the night? 'Oh, Nate! It's so good to see you!'"
"I do not sound like that!"
"Sure, Shortcake. And I haven't won more Grammy's than you."
"And I wasn't flirting with Nate!"
"Isn't that what you were doing? Twirling your hair, while batting those fake eyelashes," he scoffed.
Payton was offended. Her eyelashes were 100% real! "I'll have you know, these lashes are completely natural."
"No they're not," he sang.
"Fine! I'm wearing mascara, but that's all."
"So they're not au naturale."
Payton licked her lips. It. Was. On.
"But they're not false eyelashes either!"
Ashton retorted, "I never said they were. I said they were fake!"
Payton pulled Ashton towards her, and they embraced in a fiery, hot kiss.
Payton heard the catcalls, but she didn't care.
