July 1819
We left the port of Nantucket at first dawn, a majority of the men waving farewell to their loved ones. A few tears had been shed, as the Essex slowly but surely made her way out to sea in the high hopes of catching ourselves plenty of the worlds most magnificent beasts, the sperm whale, and bring back a ship full of whale oil. Once port was out of sight and the crew had settled down I got to know my first mate Owen Chase, along with his colleague and my second mate Mathew Joy. Despite stealing Chase's place as captain, we seem to be off to a good start. Honestly, I never wanted to be captain, but due to being from the family who perfected the art of whale hunting, I was what you would call "thrown under the boat". George Pollard signing out.
