I kept close to Chris' side as he walked through the woods with his hands in his pockets. He was letting me have my own space, and he looked like he wasn't that worried about me running away. I had to like him a little more for that. For trusting me.

About a mile into the woods, Chris grabbed my hand and steered me in a new direction, off the trail and into a clearer section of trees. Now we really weren't gonna run into any other people. This mad me more nervous than I was before, and I bit my lip to hold back the many questions I wanted to ask.

I wasn't paying attention to the ground as much as I should have, and there were more roots than before since we were no longer on the trail. At one point I tripped and stumbled, but a firm arm wrapped around my waist and caught me. I looked up and he looked like he was trying to hold back laughter at my clumsiness. I blushed deeply and he just shook his head as he tightened his arm around my waist. That seemed to open up the floodgate of questions I had been dying to ask.

"Where are we going?" I blurted out. He glanced over at me briefly and smiled.

"I told you. A place I go to when I like to be alone," he explained, the smile still on his face.

"It's not on the trail?" I questioned curiously.

"Nope," he said, no sounding like he was going to explain further.

As we continued to walk, Chris seemed like he didn't want the silence between us to last.

"What's your family like?" he asked, seeming truly curious.

"Um, well I live with my parents and my dog, but I visit my sister a lot. She's twenty-one," I said softy. He nodded and looked like he was in deep thought.

"Do you miss them?" he asked quietly. I sighed and nodded, and his jaw clenched. I kept glancing at him nervously, and then he turned to me and smiled reassuringly. I smiled back and he laughed.

"What?" I asked.

"You're still blushing," he said with a chuckle, referring to when I almost fell. I blushed harder and avoided his gaze, and he continued to talk to me for the rest of the walk. I was surprised that he was taking the time to know more about me, and I wondered why. The only thing I noticed was that every time I asked him about his own past, he always cleverly avoided the question. I finally gave up on trying to learn about his past, and that's when he stopped.

He walked over to a giant fallen tree with a moss-covered trunk, surrounded by a wall of leaves that would be able to hide anyone that sat on the large trunk.

Chris sat on the trunk and leaned back against the base of a living tree, motioning for me to sit next to him. I hesitantly sat down next to him and he pulled me into his lap as his hands rested on my waist and prevented me from falling. I was still a bit uncomfortable in his lap, but I didn't protest. I didn't want him to be angry with me when he had been the nicest he had ever been to me today.

He continued to talk to me for a while, and he slowly began answering some of my own questions. I learned that his last name was Brown and his favorite color was red, but I didn't learn anything much more personal than that. He told me a few other things about himself, but whenever I asked a question he didn't want to answer, his jaw would clench and I would hurriedly ask another question.

I was so engrossed in our conversation that I didn't realize what time it was, and I didn't know how long we had been here. I realized that Chris wasn't as bad as he wanted other people to believe, and I didn't think I would be as scared of him as I used to be from now on. He wasn't who he pretended to be. He wasn't a bad person, except for the fact that he kidnapped me.
