I got home that night, took a shower and went straight to bed. I woke up and was instantly thankful that it was Saturday so mom wasn't going to yell at me for staying out that late. It was around 1:00 in the morning when my head hit the pillow.
Now it's 12:34 P.M. and I have to get up. I go down the stairs to find my mother making biscuits and bacon. I open the fridge and pour myself some orange juice."You came in late last night, how'd you sleep?" She said. "Fine." I responded. "Um, mom." I say as I sit on stool at the counter. "Yes, Aria." "Will you take me to the library to turn in a job application, and for a job interview?" I asked. "Job interview?" "Yeah?" I questioned. "Sure, but why didn't you tell me you wanted a job?" " I don't know, I guess I didn't want to make a big deal out of it." I answered. I knew she would be ok with it because once we were talking about jobs and she said if I ever wanted a job, that she would be happy to drive me to and from work.
As we sat down to eat breakfast we continued the conversation. "Honey, you should have told me sooner, but why do you want to work at the library?" " Well I like reading books and I figured it would save you the trips to the library for getting me books, plus I can walk to the library from school, except for now, in the summer." "Well, what time should I bring you?" "After breakfast is good. The interview is at 2:15" I said with a smile.
We finish breakfast and I go upstairs and change. I throw on a t-shirt and some bermuda shorts, not what I want to ware but it is for a job interview. I put on some tennis shoes, even though I would prefer sandals, as I said its for a job interview. I brush my hair and part it to the right side with a French twist. I've never been fond of make up but I like cover up and foundation to cover blemishes, along with a small amount of mascara to define my eyes which are green with a brownish/yellowish ring around the pupils. My stringy blond hair hangs down in knots an hour after I brush it making me regret waring it down, but I always do ever since my mom told me pony tails make split ends.
I get to the library and go to the job interview. There's one boy waiting for his interview so there's not much competition. The interview is short with simple questions and when we were done the lady that was interviewing me told me I got the job since one other person was there and there were three jobs open.
That Monday I start the job. It's mainly putting books back on the shelves but there are four carts filled with books. I was alone with my cart when the boy from the interview Saturday, walks up, and asks if he can help. I say "sure." "What is your name?" He asks."Aria, yours?" I say in a busy like voice, searching for the to put a book labeled Y SHO. "Danny, Danny Winchester." "Aria, Aria James." I mimic with a smile as I glance at him. He laughs. "So why did you get a job here?" "Why did you?" I respond. He studies me and says "Why not?" "Why here?" When he doesn't respond I say "I wanted money and had noting better to do." "Same and almost no one goes to the library anymore so it's probably easy work.
"Slacker" I say jokingly with a smile on my face. "So why are you working here?" He questions. "Well I like books, they were hiring, and I can walk here from my school." "And what school is that?" He responds. "Lincoln High" I say. "I'm going there in the fall." He says. "Well, you'll see me there." I respond. "Alright basic information. What grade are you in? How old are you? When were you born?" He says "senior, 17, and April 25" I reply. I was about to ask him the same when he opens his mouth and says "junior, 17, and June 28th." We finish up with the cart shortly after and then we each take a cart and work separately.
At lunch time is when I see Danny again and we eat lunch together in the cafe, and talk about how the school is. When we go back to work we have three carts of books to arrange in the reserved section. That takes us an hour and a half and then we have to start training on how to work the computers. We learn how to take library cards to check out books, place them on reserve, and return them. Then we work on doing all that when someone has a library card and doesn't have it with them. We also learn how to take in information to make and library card and how to renew one. Learning and taking one or two practice runs takes about an hour, when we finish, Linda, our instructor tells us we have from now (around 3:00) until 3:45 to practice and then we will have about 3-5 carts of books to put where they need to be.
After, Linda leaves, Danny and I practice with each other using our library cards. We make sure we both know how to do everything and then we get into a conversation about movies coming out. We were just talking about super hero movies and how they were popular, when Linda, comes and takes us to the front desk to get the carts. The rest of the day we just put books up on the shelves or in the reserved section.
I start up the conversation by asking if he just moved here. "Yes, I moved here from Chicago." He replied. "So tell me what brings you from big city Chicago to small town Metairie, Louisiana." I ask. "Well my dad found work in New Orleans, and we moved here." "So do you like it here so far?" I reply. "yeah, it's not so bad." He answers. "So what does your dad do?" I ask. "He dives for like, a company I don't remember the name." He responds. "Cool" I say. "Yeah, he dove in Lake Michigan, and now he'll dive in the Gulf of Mexico." He says.
That night I go home and can't stop thinking of Danny with his smile, his laugh, and his interesting personality.
