A couple days later, that Friday, I decide its safe enough to probably use my gift at work. I've thought about it and I'll look around to make shore no one is there and keep my ears peeled for footsteps, or a door creaking open, or the knob turning.
So when I'm doing my afternoon shelving I use my gift to put books back. I look around and don't see anyone then I use it. I put my hand up behind the cart and one of the books starts floating, then I float it toward me. It's a copy of 'Delirium'. I search for the place it belongs and find it. In the place where it goes a book is leaning diagonally on another book. I take my left hand and hold it up, fingers spread, and move the book out of the way while keeping the book it was leaning on steady. Then I slip the book I'm making float with my right hand in the right place.
I'm picking up another book, and have it in midair, when I hear the door open and I drop the book. I turn around, eyes wide and heart racing only to see Danny. "Ugh, you scared me so bad. What are you tryin' to do, give me a heart attack?" I say to cover why I dropped the book. Dear God, I really hope he didn't see it in the air without me touching it. "No, but my dire good looks will." He said. I rolled my eyes and said "sure." He was attractive, but not totally hot. He isn't hot but not ugly, like he is neutral to handsome. He has brown hair, with green eyes, and I see muscular arms and suddenly I'm wondering what it looks like under his shirt. He could have a six pack there has to be at least a four.
"So... need any help?" He asks, with a smile. And suddenly I realized that I was starring at his midsection a second too long. He has straight teeth too. "Um, sure" I say picking the book off of the floor. We work in silence for a little while.
Out of the blue, as if he'd just remembered something, he says " So when were you going to tell me?" "Tell you what?" I respond suspiciously. "About your Special ability." My heart skips a beat and I freeze for a few second. When I continue what I'm doing I say. " I don't know what your talking about." Please tell me this is a joke or a... But I don't get to finish the thought before he says. "Don't act dumb, I already knew you had one, plus I saw you using it fifteen minutes ago to put a book away! By the way you should really be more careful about it." He said in a loud, sharp whisper. Aw, great another person who knows five people now. This person is next to a total stranger, great job Aria. Wait, he knew I had one? As in he knew I had a special ability, but not what it was. Or their are more like mine. Maybe they have answers!
"How do you know about it? Are there more people like me? How did you know before you saw it?" I asked "I'll explain how I know to you after work, but here is not the place to do it." He responded. "Okay, then where." I ask. " I'll drive you home from work." He says.
Later we get into the car and I ask "So how is it, exactly, that you know about my power?" "Well, the real reason I moved here is because I'm part of a group of scientists. It's kind of like a resistance group because our main purpose is to keep people with special abilities safe from the government. They know about some people with abilities and they have an idea our group might be formed but they don't know where, or who we are." He explained. "Where were you before?" I say processing what he just said. "Delaware" He says. "How did you know I had one?" I ask. "Well using your power takes energy, so we monitor the energy fields to make sure we find you before the government dose." "So there's a possibility the government knows about me?" I say in a worried tone of voice."Yes, but I won't let that happen." He says in a serious tone. As in him, himself or his so called "group". What dose the government do? "Why are you hiding from the government what did they do?" I say. "The last few people they hunted down are being worn out using their abilities to their advantage. You see using your powers takes up energy and having energy coursing through you takes your energy too, so you have to adapt to using it on big things and in large, continuous amounts. We can't let this happen to anyone else so that's why we formed the group, and we move every six months so that we aren't found." He says.
