I went to see who was at the door to a little girl crying. "Please help me, something is happening to my mommy!" I didn't know what to do, I was so shocked. She stood there crying and mumbling different things I can't explain.
"Uhh come in sweety and watch my cat." The little girl nodded and stepped in my house. I led her to the kitchen and told her where the bathroom was if she needed it. I gave her a glass of water and asked where she lived. She gave me directions the best she could but I didn't fully understand the flustered 7 year old. I finally got enough information to get to her house. She kept talking about what her mother was saying and doing under her breath. I heard bits and peices of what she was saying. She asked what my cat's name was.
"Anni, she reminds me of a friend I had in school." I started to remember Anni, and what happened all those years ago. We were best friends in middle school. We would spend the weekends at each others houses and we'd walk to the end of the street and buy ice cream at the gas station and then walk back passing our elementary school. I will never forget those days, but she did. She didn't remember why we were friends, and why I would've gone to the end of the world for her. And I did, I literally went to the end of the world for Anni. So when I got my cat, she was this little fur ball who couldn't see anything but what was right in front of her face. Not that she was blind, but that she didn't care about anything except what was happening right now. She was an 'in the moment' kind of person, and that's what I admired about her. The little girl pulled on my sleeve and started crying again. Then I remembered her mother and told her to stay put while I went to her house. I grabbed my boots, a hat, and my jacket. I locked the door behind me and ran to the house repeating the directions. I walked up the driveway and knocked on the door. No answer. I peeked through the window and saw it was open. I climbed through and I still don't know what I saw. I would never be prepared enough for when I walked into that house.
