Chapter 5, Where Is She?

Carl's P.O.V.

We circled around the fence as we thought of a way to get in. As we walked, I couldn't help but notice a large, black backpack next to a hole in the fence. "That's her bag," I mumbled, jogging over to it. The front pocket was open, revealing cans of food and a few water bottles. Dad took the bag and handed it to Glenn to carry.

"There's a small hole in the fence, she must've cut her way through," Daryl pointed out.

"There's no way she could've made it, look at all the walkers in there," T-Dog commented, pointing to the courtyard that was crawling with walkers.

"You don't see them feasting, do you?" I asked. There wasn't a circle of walkers like when they feast. They were all scattered around the perimeter. She could've made it.

"Glenn, hand me the bolt cutters. We're gonna need to cut the hole a little bigger," Dad requested. Glenn handed him the bolt cutters and he cut up the fence, making the hole taller. Daryl opened the hole in the fence so everyone could get through. Once we were all within the first fence, Daryl sealed the hole with a wire and clipped it shut.

It took time and a lot of ammo, but eventually the courtyard was completely empty of walkers. We created a fire in the grass and hunkered down for the night. We ate food and told stories. Beth and Maggie even sang a song together at Hershel's request. My dad gave a whole speech, too. Can't go one day without a speech from Rick Grimes, now can we? He told us how he knew we were all tired, but we only had to push just a little bit more. He explained how this place was a gold mine with an infirmary, an armory, and a food supply.

I had no idea what happened to that girl. Her bag was outside the fence, but she was no where to be seen. She wasn't one of the walkers we killed or that were pushed up against the fence currently. It was like she just poofed.

I put my tired mind at ease and laid in the grass. The mysterious girl flooded my thoughts as my eyelids grew heavier. Before I knew it, I was dead asleep.
