Orphanage. Gods, I hate that word.
Situated in my bedroom in yet another orphanage, I sat lost in thought. My memory, once washed, was coming back to me, but slowly. I had arrived here at St. Therese's Orphanage in New York two nights ago after I ran away from two, ugly, seven foot tall creatures. I could tell they were men. Well, only if you call a hairy, smelly, stocky giant with a single bloodshot eye right in the middle or thier forehead a man. It was clear that they had one agenda inside the unoccupied spaces in thier brain. And I was pretty sure it was to kill me.
I know you'd probably say I'm crazy or hallucinating or something, but I'm dead serious. As far as I could remember, I was chased by a lot of things - bloodthirsty monsters, unusual creatures, and surely some stuff that you don't want to know about.
Taking a glance in the mirror, I saw that some people were approaching me from behind. There was Sister Ann, a kind nun who helped me when I had collapsed infront of the building. Accompanying her were my new friends, Sybil and and Asian girl named Lynda. She had lost her parents and refused to be adopted, so she settled in the orphanage and preferred not to leave. Lynda was beautiful without a doubt, with her glistening dark brown eyes and her raven black hair that would fall perfectly in a silky curtain down her back. And then there was Raina, a beautiful, blonde girl with jade green eyes, who was always hippy and upbeat. If you ever feel down in the dumps, she's the one you'd turn to without hesitation. Raina was a great person to hang out with, and she radiated joy. It was comforting to be around her, like she radiated the energy and warmth of the sun.
"We're all ready downstairs. It's best we go." Sister Ann informed.
I wasn't exactly in the mood to go, but I didn't say anything. Nothing was worse than sounding like a brat. Instead I said, "Sure. Give me a few moments; I have to...check something. Be right back."
My clothes were soiled and torn. I was still wearing my white shirt with a fading image of a full moon, a black windbreaker, and faded, worn, jeans. As I walked out of my room, I noticed that Raina and Sybil were following me from behind.
"Hey, there," Sybil said, trying to get my attention. "You look great."
I spun around and laughed, my mood improving. I've been wearing the same clothes for the past three, four days. "Thanks."
We went downstairs where everyone was ready for the field trip, which was basically visiting visiting landmarks here in New York. Mother Clara insisted that we children needed a break. Outside, a van waited for us, it's engine humming. Everyone climbed in, and Sybil, Raina and I took the backseat so that we could all sit together.
"So, I hear the double freaks just got tripled," an auburn hair girl taunted, sitting two seats infront of us. She was peering at us with such an annoying expression that I certainly would've punched her if Raina and Sybil wern't gripping my shoulders with a firm hands.
"She is so not worth it, Luna," Sybil said to me, although she looked like she personally wanted to pummel the girl's face.
Raina let go of my shoulder. "Sybil's right, Luna. Don't mind her," she said, with more of a calmed voice.
"Just back off, Mitch," Sybil growled at her. "Just because your going to be adopted within a week by some rich people," she glared intentley at Mitch, her voice becoming somewhat stronger, "dosen't mean you can boss us around and make fun of us. I suggest you turn around in your seat and shut up."
Suddenly, Mitch looked shaken and confused, like Sybil's words suddenly made sense to her. As if hypnotized, she turned around in her seat.
Shaking my head in disbelief, I glanced at Sybil. "How did you do that?" I inquired.
Sybil shrugged, as if she commanded people on a daily basis. I guess she kind of does sometimes, but not in that way. "I guess it's my ADHD powers acting up," she joked, and gave us one of her humorous grins.
Raina and I laughed. "The three of us are ADHD, but you're the only one that can do that to people." I said to her.
"Yeah, you were so cool, Sy!" Raina added.
All throughout the ride, I noticed that Mitch didn't bother us anymore. Instead, she looked sort of frightened, as if Sybil had scared her out of her wits. It was an awesome trick, yes, but scary? I didn't think so. Anyway, we continued on to our first destination in New York City, which was the Empire State Building.
