Save before a TRIAL/GYM, each of the ELITE FOUR, the CHAMPION, and (if possible) the LEADERS and IMPORTANT PEOPLE in all of the different teams (like N and Gethesis from team Plasma).

I do this because if I somehow loose, I can turn my DS off/close the game so the lose isn't recorded AND (if you're challenging Pokemon League) it doesn't send you back to the beginning.
