The next morning, Hana awoke to find the spot previously occupied by Nishiki cold and empty. There was no one in the kitchen or bathroom, bringing her to the conclusion that he'd left. Her phone had been plugged in, though, courtesy of him. Her notifications were barren which was a stark surprise. Hana retrieved her TV remote, flipping to the main news channel for her ward. The headline, like she expected, were the incidents of last night.
"If you're just now joining us, we want to catch you up on the information that's been gathered about the Ghoul attack that happened yesterday night. The boy that was retrieved from the scene was rushed to the hospital where he underwent an organ transplant. Here with us, we have the surgeon that performed the procedure. Tell us, why was this so controversial?" The camera that had been focused on the anchor, now panned so that her and the surgeon were in full view. His face was pale with sweat dotting his forehead.
"We couldn't get ahold of the boy's parents, so there was no proper consent for the transplant. But I wasn't just going to let him die! And surprisingly enough, the girl who had died near him had organs in perfect shape that were compatible with his body. We're waiting now t-" Hana shut the TV off, her own palms growing clammy with anxiety.
"Kaneki..." She breathed, dropping the remote. The back of it broke off, sending the batteries rolling on the floor.
After fixing the remote, Hana brewed a cup of coffee and brought out some of the meat her and Nishiki had gathered. She ate breakfast in cold silence with her curtains closed and all lights off. She's always hated any way of seeing herself while she fed. It wasn't just the vulnerability aspect, but the fact that her being a Ghoul is so...different. While Hana was washing the plate, her phone went off from across the room. With her hands wet, Hana accepted the call and placed it on speaker.
"Hello?" The voice cut through, it was Hide.
"Good morning, Hide. What do you need?"
"I heard about Kaneki last night...I was headed to see him if you want to tag along." Wherever he was, it was noisy.
"Can you give me about half an hour? I just woke up." Hana dried her hands on her pajama pants, taking her phone over to the closet.
"Yeah, about that... it'll be kind of hard considering I'm already outside your complex."
Hana muted the mic long enough to groan aloud. She un-muted herself, said goodbye to Hide, and began getting ready. Hana had a sinking feeling for what awaited her at the hospital, even though the news painted the picture of him being alive. At least she'd have Hide's boisterous nature to lighten her mood. After slipping on a shirt, rapid knocks came to her door. She was startled, but made her way to answer it. On the other side, stood a broadly smiling Hide with two coffees in hand.
"So, shall we?" He handed one to Hana, and she asked him to wait while she finished getting ready.
Shortly thereafter the two were on their way to visit Kaneki. They talked little, each swamped with their own thoughts, some more than others. Aside from a semi-silent walk, it was also unnervingly bleak. The sky teased of rain and cold puddles scattered themselves throughout their path. Soon the familiar cold look of the hospital came into view, and they entered. Hana pushed passed Hide and approached the lady at the front desk.
"We're here on terms of visiting someone," Hana pursed her lips, "Kaneki Ken?"
"My apologies, ma'am, but it says he's requested no visitors." The secretary flashed an apologetic smile.
Hana hit her fist against the counter, turning to walk out. That is, before a pungent odor hurled itself into her nose. Her shoes turned sharply on the tile floor, creating a sharp squeaking sound. She pushed by several doctors and Hide on her way to a swinging set of doors. She continued to run through the halls, choosing to ignore the elevators and instead scale the staircases. With each floor she climbed, the smell grew more intense. She could hear footfalls from behind her, most likely belonging to Hide as he tried to keep up.
