words unspoken

words unspoken,

swallowed and trapped beneath our bellies.

bite them back,

don't let them flow.

don't imagine a river of syllables,

of poetry

slipping from your lips.

if you speak, they will hear the tremble in your voice.

they will hear the weakness and they will tear you apart.

i hear that they can smell fear,

better buy some perfume.

sew your mouth shut as to keep it from flapping;

don't imagine the white sails of a boat.

you will never be brave,

you have never been brave.

breathe the minuscule pride you have left

and keep it in your lungs,

do not exhale.

for if you exhale,

they can feel your breath on the back of their necks.
