Chapter 4: The Wolf
"We haven't seen the last of them," Adelene said in the darkness, flashing her light ahead of us, cutting the darkness with the beam of her light. "We must hurry, the faster we go, the quicker our tracks will cover."
"Hold on," Viola said, looking back down the tunnel from where we came from. "That guy... there was something about him..."
"We don't have time for this, Viola," Adelene said, urgently. "We must go now."
She shook her head, still unmoving from her spot. She leaned her head back as if to catch a glimpse from the dude. "I swear... it was like he didn't even mind that he was challenging a Vampire. He was too confident."
"Viola, what are you saying?" I ask, as I tug on her hand.
She looked back at me, with this expression on her face I hadn't seen in a long time. Clenched jaw, cold eyes, and stoic lips. "I think he was a werewolf."
"There's no time now," Adelene narrowed her eyes down at the end of the hall. "We must move now."
We ran.
The halls felt as though they became even more of a maze than it ever has before. The water became a nuisance while we tried to keep on running, to put as much distance between us and the Vampires behind.
My hand was still in Viola's as we ran. She was ahead of me, with her hand reaching back to grasp mine. And suddenly, I was reminded of a distant memory.
---
"Hurry, Styx, run!" I shout, hand outstretched in front of me to push the door open, while my other hand held onto the dainty human's. I slammed the door behind me and together, we rushed up the stairs, and into the main hall. Just as we were about to cross the space, Sage appeared, blocking my path. "Sage, please, you must go."
But Sage stood, arms crossed. Her eyes went to Styx, who had two small holes in her neck. Styx brought a hand over the wound, looking down at the floor, as if ashamed she'd been captured by Snow and made to be her thrall. "This is very quare, ain't it? What's happenin'?"
"Sage, you have to go. Snow, she's infuriated. I've managed to outrun her so far, but it won't be long before--"
"Rowan!" A voice bellowed from below our feet, into the dungeons. I felt a chill run up my spin and I grabbed Styx's waist, bringing her to my chest securely.
Sage's eyes filled to the brim with unadulterated fear and she swallowed hard. "Aye, she sounds mad."
"Sage!"
She began looking around and then she stopped and stared. "Here." She grabbed my arm and dragged Styx and I into the wizarding court. Sage pressed the door closer to me and said, "Stay down here, ya hear? Don't be comin' out fer nothin'! I'll lure her away."
"No, Sage, wait--"
"Stop yer jabberin', lass. I've got this," she winked and closed the door in my face.
Seconds later, the sound of Snow's angered footsteps echoed in the great hall. "Sage!" She bellowed, her voice carrying through the entire kingdom. "Where is she? Where is Rowan?"
"Snow, hello," Sage said, surprisingly cool, calm and collected. My faith in her rose just a bit. I pressed my ear to the door to hear better. "Rowan? I haven't seen her. Ya sure she came this way?"
"Of course, you blundering fool! I can smell her trail!"
"Then why don't ya follow it, Snow?"
