Book #1: Elysian House: The Bitten Elixir
Chapter 1: Snow's Mate
"What was she like when you were kids?" Styx asked me one day as we sat under the large orchid. Her knees were bent underneath her, as she was threading her dainty fingers through the blades of fresh grass. She truly did look beautiful, even for a human. "Was she any better?"
My back was pressed flat against the ground, so I could see her like this. With the sun beaming down behind her, lighting her blonde hair up as if it were a halo. When she was in the sunlight, I always felt as if she were an angel sent from God. My fingers surely would burn if I were to touch her now.
It was the only time I could spend time with her without ridicule from Snow. The day time was the natural enemy of a Vampire. The sun didn't burn us, of course, but it certainly wasn't comfortable for us to be in. But suddenly, the sun that had always annoyed me as a child had become so incredibly beautiful. Especially when it was shining on her.
Having remembered her question, I sat up, to properly address her question. It had been some time since she had spoken at all to me, so I wanted to make this last for as long as possible. As long as she would allow me. "Snow?" She nodded. "No, she wasn't. She's always been this way. Since the day she found me. She has an ideal Vampire, in her mind. The kind that drink from humans and rule over the land."
"And what is your ideal Vampire?" She asks me, finally looking at me. It was rare for her to actually look at me when she spoke. It was rare she would look at me at all. And I found I craved her attention, begged for it even. I was finding myself doing anything in my power to gain her attention, even if for a second.
I rest my chin against my knee that was pressed up into my chest. "My ideal Vampire..." if anyone had asked me before I met her, I might have said that I wasn't sure. My reality had always been what Snow created for it. But now as I sit here with her at my side, I was certain I knew what I wanted. "My ideal Vampire would be my ideal future. A future in which Vampires and humans coexisted without fear. No more segregated Vampiric communities, nor any human farms. Just two species living together as one."
Her smile nearly made me faint. I swallowed hard, trying to moisten my dry, cracked throat. This was stronger than any blood lust I'd ever felt. Any sort of affection I may have felt for others in the past. It all dulled in comparison to my feelings right now. Oh, how I wish I could speak these words to her.
Would she accept them?
"That'd be nice," Styx had said, looking dreamily up into the sky, letting those deep blue orbs of hers brighten up with the sunlight. I wished I could reach out to touch her face, to feel how soft it was. Her cheek would be as soft as the clouds that were in the sky, I am certain. Her eyes... they are as blue as the sky itself. "I wish I could live in that reality."
"Then I will make it so," I said immediately, sitting forward. "I will build cities for you and create armies to guard you. Anything you desire, Styx, I will make it so. I will build, for you, your own reality."
She looked at me then, really looked at me. And as she turned back to the horizon, a small smile graced her pink lips.
---
"I'm gonna kill you when you get back home!"
I flinched into the phone when I heard the words slip from her mouth. I pulled it back a little, since she had screeched them directly into my ear. I brought it back to my cheek when I was certain she wasn't screaming anymore. "I know, I'm sorry," I said. "I just wanted to do this by myself."
