ELIAS' POV
My stomach dropped as she threw those words to me. My mouth was dry and my head was spinning. Was this finally a turning point in our lives? Does Sarah want to have a family with me?
She lifted her striped with tears, puffy face, to look at me. She was probably waiting for me to say something, but I couldn't. I couldn't stop thinking about whether she had genuinely wanted to tell me about the pregnancy or not. Did she say it because she found Clare's garment in the bathroom and wanted me to stay? Sarah was against divorce, she would do anything to make us stick together, just like she did before.
"How long?" I managed to croak.
A fresh stream of tears rolled from her reddened eyes. "Three months."
I wanted to ask her why she didn't tell me before, why now, does she want a family with me? I wanted to ask her so many questions, but I was so happy at the same time. I got up from my knees and sat next to her on the bed. Her eyes were on me, probably waiting to see if I would snap. I took in a deep breath and pulled her in for a hug. This was the closest we've been in months.
"Please don't leave me." She cried on my skin.
"I won't." I doubtfully promised.
The weekend was a breeze and I didn't want to go to school. Sarah and I have been spending time together and even though it felt wrong to be with her, I couldn't help but think of her as the mother of my child. I couldn't help imagining her holding our baby in her arms.
I grabbed my brown bag and laid it on my desk. Just a few more hours.
By the end of the day, I was stuffing my documents in my bag. I heard a soft knock on the door and looked up, oddly hoping to see Sarah. I felt a wave of guilt when I saw Clare, smiling at me.
"Hi." I lowered my gaze and started packing my stuff slower.
I heard her trotting to me. "I've something for you." She teased and I was scared to face her.
She handed me an enveloppe. I took if confidently. "What's this?" I glanced at her.
"Just a tiny gift." She smiled again.
I opened it and grabbed the content. It was a ticket to France. My eyes widened, before I could protest, she started rambling.
"I know you're gonna say that you can't take it and stuff but you can! I'll be accompanying you, of course. Also, I bought it with my money, so that's that. I have shares in a company and I sold them. I know I'm not 18 yet, my shares are on my father's name, but they're mine. Am I making sense? I just really don't want you to not take them." She ended before taking a deep breath,
"Clare, I have something to tell you." I closed the space between us before grabbing her hand, leading her to a chair for her to sit on.
"What?" She giggled.
"I have to stop seeing you." I didn't budge.
"What?" Her beautiful smile disappeared.
"Sarah is pregnant. You have to understand. I've always wanted a family and now, by all odds she's pregnant." Clare removed her hand from mine before looking at me. Her eyes were glossy and my throat tightened, why do I make people who I care about, cry?
I could see by the way she blinked that she didn't want to cry, not again, not in front of me. I had ruined everything, she was so happy, I didn't care about the impact of my words on her, I was selfish.
