Chapter 2
I'd never been more happy that it was Friday and that I didn't have to worry about my homework for the whole weekend. I greeted my mother and then grabbed my book and headed out towards my reading spot in the woods. I wouldn't admit it to myself, but I wanted to run into Andrew again. I felt rather silly about it, so I kept telling myself I was simply going to read in my favorite reading spot. Because I liked reading. And that was the only reason. To my surprise, when I arrived at the reading spot, Andrew was already there. But... there was someone with him.
She was tall, and her light orange hair had been pulled into two, long, bushy braids, with multiple wisps of hair escaping and framing her face. She was paler than Andrew, who I assumed was her brother, although not by much, and she was freckled like crazy. She had her brother's eyes, except almost darker and deeper and more like melted chocolate than anything else. She was dressed casually, in a crop top and jeans, with mud splattered overalls. And she looked amazing.
"Um, hi." I said, using my strong power of words. Andrew waved at me.
"This is my sister, Abigail," he said, introducing the girl.
"Hi, I'm Meredith." I said.
"Hi! It's really nice to meet you, Meredith. I heard a lot about you from my brother." She laughed as Andrew turned bright red. I smiled. Just then, I heard a distant yell. Andrew's face darkened.
"Dad wants me back at the farm." he groaned. "See you later, Meredith."
"See you," I replied, and then he was gone, and I was alone with Abigail.
"So, what did your brother tell you about me?" I asked cautiously. Abigail laughed at that.
"He thinks you're pretty." she confided. "But also sarcastic."
"Well, that could never be true," I said, my voice dripping sarcasm. Abigail giggled and I felt a flush of happiness.
"So, do you think he's cute?" she asked me. I was caught off guard.
"Um."
"I don't blame if you don't, I'm just curious."
"I don't really know," I said, my face hot.
"Alright." Abigail regarded me. I wondered if I looked okay - God, my hair was probably a mess as usual, and who even knows how my face looked.
"Well, you seem pretty okay, Meredith." she concluded. I nodded, feeling awkward.
"So, um, are you guys twins?" I asked. Abigail nodded.
"We're both sixteen, turning seventeen in March. Born on St.Patrick's Day, actually. Probably why I'm a ginger." Abigail joked.
"Same age as me! I turn seventeen in late June. So where do you guys go to school? I don't think I've seen you around."
"Oh, we're homeschooled, actually." Abigail explained.
"Really? What's that like?"
"I mean, I'm used to it, so I could never imagine public school, but it pretty much means I rarely leave the farm, and I'm pretty disconnected from society. I have a phone, but...it's a flip phone. And I spend all my time with my dad and my brother, which can be pretty exhausting, being the only girl." Abigail said.
"Don't you have any friends?" I asked. Abigail shook her head.
"I had a few when I was younger, and in this homeschooled kid group, but most of them went to public school once they were in ninth grade, and my dad needed us to stay home to help out at the farm, since it's just the three of us."
