Over the weekend, the student government members at their high school decorated for the holidays. Snowflakes are now hung up in the hallways and a holiday tree is set up in the student body commons.
Karlie smiles as she walks into school on Monday morning. It's not just the smell of the pine that brings a smile to her face. She bought her dress for the winter formal over the weekend from a small boutique in the mall. All she has left to do is ask Taylor. And tell her mom that this Taylor is not the school's quarterback, but instead an adorably geeky senior who plays guitar and writes songs in her free time.
"Hi!" A cute voice peeps up from behind Karlie and she finds two hands pressed over her eyes.
"Taylor?" Karlie spins around, fully prepared to embrace her friend in a warm hug, but instead sees someone unexpected.
"Well you don't look very happy to see me," Toni teases, sticking out her tongue and poking Karlie in the side.
"I just--I was expecting...never mind. Of course I'm happy to see you, Toni. How was your weekend?" Embarrassment crosses over Karlie's face. Of course it wasn't Taylor. She never sees Taylor before 6th period.
Toni and Karlie walk to first period English together as Toni blabs on about her weekend, talking about a modeling job she got offered. Usually, Karlie would be interested. Her and Toni are apart of the same modeling agency, but recently, Karlie has focused more on school, baking, and..other things.
"That's great," Karlie muses, not really listening anymore.
"What's on your mind?" Toni asks, sitting down in a desk next to Karlie. She leans over to the blonde, "Is it the Winter Formal? Are you asking someone?"
A rosy tint spreads over Karlie's cheeks and she pretends to rummage in her backpack. "Hmm..Winter Formal? Are we having that this year?"
Toni lets out a childish scream, "Kar, don't pretend with me! You know I can always tell when you're lying. Oh, you are so asking someone!! Tell me!!"
Karlie shrugs. "Sh--He's no one." Shit, every time.
"You have to tell me. Is it Josh? It's probably Josh."
"Um, yeah it's Josh." Karlie says. Who's Josh? That kid in my business class?
Toni screams again, earning a menacing look from the teacher. "I knew it was Josh!" She whispers excitedly.
Karlie nods. How am I going to get myself out of this one?

I've been looking forward to those green eyes and cute smile all day, Taylor thinks as she practically skips to last period study hall. The library is crowded but she experiences a moment of tunnel vision, and the only girl she can see is Karlie, sitting at their usual table, with her headphones on.
Taylor leaps over to Karlie, unable to control her excitement. She flings her backpack on the table and falls into the seat next to her friend.
Karlie looks up, taking her headphones off. With an amused look on her face, she says, "Hey Taylor, what's up?"
"I took this quiz on buzzfeed today while I was in my environmental science class and it said that out of all the emojis, I was the crown one." Taylor blurts.
"Oh, that's why you texted me that emoji multiple times with no context," Karlie laughs. "Anyway, of course you got the crown. You're basically a princess. Well, you look like one."
"You think?" Taylor smirks.
Suddenly, Karlie's face is hot and the turtleneck sweater she's wearing seems to suffocate her neck, making it impossible to swallow or form rational thoughts. "Well, I mean, you have the hair, the blonde hair, and the face...and you, well you know, look like you could, um, wear a crown. You have a nice head for it."
"Thanks? I think?" Taylor chuckles. "Now I get to pick out an emoji for you.'
"Can't I just take the quiz you took?" Karlie's face is flushed.
Taylor shakes her head no. She pretends to be thinking really hard, tapping her finger on her lip and furrowing her brow.
"Oh, I've got it!" Taylor exclaims, like she hadn't already picked out the emoji immediately after finishing her own quiz.
Karlie raises her eyebrows in question. "Am I going to like this?"
"You're the sunshine emoji because seeing you is the highlight of my day."
"Aw." Karlie lets out a small breath of air. "I'm your sunshine?"
"Yeah, you can be my sunshine, but only if I can be your princess." Taylor says playfully.
The two girls shake hands. "Deal."
Taylor sighs as the moment passes and her hand falls from Karlie's. I'm going to miss this when I leave. I'm going to miss this a lot.
"So listen," Karlie clears her throat, "My friend Toni is having a party this weekend because her parents are out of town. Do you wanna go with me?"
Taylor perks up. She's never really liked parties. The crowd of stupid people, the drinks, the noise: it was all too much for her. In her earlier high school years, she went all the time, just to experience a traditional high school social life. She had felt obliged to go. This time was different though. Parties aren't that fun, but spending time with Karlie is.
"Of course! I wouldn't miss it." The older girl nods. "What time does it start?"
"Around 8 on Saturday night."
"I'll pick you up then."
