High school, May 2002
"Guess who?" He whispered in my ear.
As he came closer, I recognized his smell. A smell like a walk through the wilderness; subtle, fresh, clean, yet wild and free. It's him again.
"Kevin" I shrugged.
"Smart guess, Olivia. It's such a miracle you're early today." He laughed.
"I don't have to guess, it's obvious it was you. Your cologne is different from the rest." I said, avoiding his sarcasm. I wasn't in the mood today.
"Hey. What's wrong?" He asked concerned.
"It's nothing." I said, avoiding eye contact.
"Olivia. We have been friends since forever. I know something is wrong. You know you can confide in me right? I'll treat you for lunch later. Will that cheer up my little Olivia?" He said, placing both his hands on my cheeks and pinching them and looking me into my eyes.
I smiled and hugged him. I really needed to hear those words in times like these. He really knows his ways of making me smile. Those were the reasons why I fall for him.
After school, we went to the mall nearby and ate at an Italian restaurant.
We ordered pizza and brownies with hot fudge. As we waited for the food, he decided to ask me why I seemed so gloomy today. I could see he was really concern; just by the way he looked into my eyes.
"My parents fought again last night." I said, forcing myself not to cry. "My dad had an affair with another woman. And my mom found out only last night. I overheard them." I continued.
I couldn't hold on any longer. I finally cried my heart out. He stood up from his seat and sat beside me and placed his arm around my shoulders.
"Everything is going to be alright." He whispered.
"No it's not going to be okay. They are to be divorced because my father and his mistress have a daughter my age. How do you expect me to be believe that everything is going to be alright?" I cried.
Then there was awkward silence. I realized that I was being rude and apologized.
"Sorry to disturb but here's your food." The waitress said.
I immediately wiped my tears and chuckled at the waitress. After that, he paid for the food and we decided to head home as it was getting late too.
"Thank you for today Kevin."
"Hey that's what best friends are for. Anyways, do you need me fetch you home?" He asked.
"No. I think I can handle myself." I said.
"Just remember to call if you need anything. I'm just a few numbers away." He said and we went our separate ways.
When I came home, I saw my mother on the floor crying, holding a glass of wine and the house was in a mess as if it had been robbed.
I ran towards her and asked her what had happened.
"He left." She said crying. And she threw the glass she was holding towards the wall.
All of a sudden, she took out a penknife and pointed at herself, " Olivia. I can't do this anymore. Without your father, we are nothing! I need your father."
Those words hurt like a scalpel. I got scared. I wanted to cry. I felt the whole worlds burden on my shoulders. I felt as if I'm about to breakdown. But I knew I had to be strong for her.
I held her face and looked her in the eye and said, "Mom. Stop. I need you. Mom, please don't do this. Be strong for me, mom. I know it hurts really badly but that's life we still have to move on somehow. I'm not telling you it's going to be easy but I'm telling you that we are going to get through this together."
She slowly placed her penknife on the floor and hugged me saying, " I'm sorry Olivia."
I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock. After I had arranged my room, and myself I went to the dining area to get some breakfast. To my surprised, my mom was preparing breakfast. She hadn't done this for a really long time.
"Oh Olivia, your finally awake. Mind helping me to arrange the plates?" She smiled. I helped her and finally breakfast was ready. As we ate breakfast, my mother suddenly touched my hand and said, "Olivia."
Then there was a long pause. "I'm sorry for what had happened last night. I know I should have been the calmer one but it seemed like you were more mature than I was. Thank you Olivia. I promise I will try to be a better parent to you from now on."
I smiled at her and said, " It's okay. I know that things will not be easy. I understand you mom. You do not have to apologize for anything because to me you're already a great mom."
We continued our breakfast and my mother went to work while I got ready to go to school.
When I finally reached school, a girl about my age made me tripped over her leg.
"Hey! What's your problem?" I shouted.
"Your my problem." She shouted back.
"Mind your words, you pathetic girl. You don't know whom your messing with. Aren't you a new transfer here? I'm going to give you a chance to just walk away. " I shouted back.
After what I said, her face turned red with fury. It was hilarious. Then the unexpected happen, she pulled my hair. Obviously I wouldn't let her win me so I pulled her hair too. Soon it caught attention of many students nearby.
Just then, Kevin came to stop us from quarreling.
"Hey. I know you're a new transferee but that doesn't give you the rights to boss around here. You might have been popular girl in your previous school but in this school you treat us with respect." Kevin said in a calm tone, glaring at the girl.
"You don't know who your messing with. I'm the one and only daughter of one of the main sponsors of this school!" I said proudly.
"Are you sure that you are the one and only daughter? I'm Belinda Grant and I'm your stepsister." She smirked, gesturing a handshake.
I couldn't believe my ears. Her last sentence echoed in my head. I couldn't hold my emotions as it reminded me of what had happen the night my father left. I immediately ran away from her. I went to a quiet place I knew, the library.
I went to the last column of the library, a place no one where no one would be able to find me, and began to cry. Suddenly, I saw a figure in front of me.
"Are you alright?" The figure said.
I couldn't see who it was but I nodded my head and soon I felt really dizzy. The next thing I knew everything went into total darkness....
