Selah sprinted toward the gap at the opposite of the clearing hoping she would find pavement. She shuffled down the road as discreetly as possible. About ten minutes into her journey she heard the gallop of hooves. She hid behind the bush closest to her and tried to decipher if it was the group of men from earlier, all she could hear was galloping and silence, no yelling and no dogs. The steps neared her at the same steady pace. She peeked her head out of the bush and saw a carriage and buggy, steering the horse was a grey haired black man in a top hat. She took two seconds to think and decided this was her chance.
Selah jumped out of the bushes and shouted, "Help, Sir, please my sister has been hurt. Can you please help us?"
The horse were reigned to a stop. The man steering looked started.
"Who are you? What are you doing out here? I could have run right over you. Are you insane?" he hollered.
"I know it was an accident! My sister has been hurt, can you please take us to town so we can find our way home? Please, sir?" she didn't have time to explain. She needed to move fast before the mob catches up to them. Plus by the time they got into town she was hoping they could lose their clothes and throw off the mob.
"I don't know..." he squinted, she could tell he was skeptical.
"She might be dying, please, I need to help her!" she lied. Whatever worked fastest was all that mattered.
"If its too far, I'm going home, alright ma'am?" he sighed, exasperated.
Selah pointed back in the direction of her sister and leaped inside the carriage. "That clearing is where she is."
It took about five minutes to get to her sister's hiding place. She jumped out of the cart and ran to the bush she had covered her sister with. Her sister wasn't there. Selah panicked. "Sadie, where are you? Sadie!" she screamed and ran towards the forest.
"Selah? That's you? Oh my goodness, I hid, I thought you were the mob." Sadie exclaimed stepping out from behind a hollowed out tree. Selah was in too much of a hurry to express her relief at her sister's safety.
"Come, now! I've got help, he said he'll take us into town so we can get home!" she reached over and practically dragged her sister back to the carriage.
"Good to see she is not dead." The old man snickered. "Hurry, you've held me up for long enough."
She pulled her sister inside and asked if he knew where Watertown was. Lucky for her he did and for now it seemed like they were home free.
