The bass reverberated inside Naomi's bones. The sweet sound of the incoherent lyrics washed over her overheated skin like cool rain. She felt lost inside the music and like she had been found all at once. She spotted Lauren approaching her across the room and the feeling of finally being where she was meant to be intensified to the point where it gathered in her throat and didn't let her say hello when Lauren greeted her with her usual divine smile.
Lauren leaned close, brushing a curl of red hair behind Naomi's ear as she spoke and setting Naomi's face ablaze.
"You like the party?"
The feeling that was consuming her currently, a mix of déja vû and the sense that all of her stars had suddenly aligned, was so indescribable that all she could do was nod.
Lauren laughed, probably at her blissed out expression, and the sound almost felt hypnotising to Naomi - her eyes followed her unwaveringly, awe in her gaze, as Lauren turned, grabbing her hand as she walked towards the bar.
"Wanna have a drink?"
Naomi looked at her, slowly, reminding herself that she was here, here with this beautiful girl, and she reached out her hand, dropping Lauren's in the process. She ran her fingers through Lauren's soft, slightly sweaty hair. It shone underneath the colourful lights, and it reminded Naomi of an oil spill - an oil spill that flickered like the rainbow when the sun caressed its surface.
"I'll have whatever you're having," Naomi finally said, smiling with exaggerated confidence.
For that, she received an eyebrow raise and the slightest ghost of a smirk, which immediately tempered her need to impress with a drop of regret.
"You sure about that Naomi?"
Lauren's smirk widened. The drop spread.
"Of course, why wouldn't I be?"
Naomi watched as Lauren turned, her body suddenly silhouetted for a split second against a flare of white light, and to Naomi, it really seemed as though there would have been nothing out of place if two magnificent wings had been emerging from the enticing slope of her back.
In a low voice that Naomi strained to hear, Lauren ordered whatever it was she drank, and she promptly received two glasses filled with a soft blue liquid that sparkled under the lights.
"This drink is just as pretty as you," Naomi said without thinking, missing the scarlet blush that dusted Lauren's cheekbones as she took a sip.
It felt like a burning fire as it went down her throat - Naomi felt she could compare it to what drinking acetone must be like. She struggled to keep a straight face, to seem cool and unaffected, but one look at Lauren's gleeful smile told her her initial disgust had not gone unnoticed.
With a wink that could only be described as cheeky, Lauren knocked back the drink in one gulp. Naomi watched the dark curve of her throat as she swallowed, entranced.
"Didn't know you liked such strong drinks," Naomi said, at a slight loss for words.
Lauren leant forward, and hesitated for a split second, before she rested her hand ever so gently on Naomi's knee. Although the touch was akin to a butterfly's wing brushing your hand, Naomi's entire body focused on that small point of connection. Lightning raced through her as she heard Lauren speak, in a low voice she hadn't heard her use before.
"There's a lot you don't know about me, Naomi."
Naomi looked at the hand on her thigh, the brown tone of Lauren's skin making her own paleness almost glow in the dark. Taking a shaky breath, she decided to risk it.
Letting her eyes trail from Lauren's hand on her leg, she pulled her gaze upwards, lingering in spots highlighted by the flickering lights, until she let them rest when she was gazing into Lauren's.
Moving closer into Lauren's space until she could feel her breath on her lips, she whispered back, "If you'll have me, I'd like to find out."
Lauren gasped quietly, and that was enough for Naomi. She surged forward, trapping the unfinished breath between their lips.
Lauren's lips were soft, a little chapped, and completely perfect.
Naomi pushed forward, feeling a little desperate as Lauren's hand tightened on her leg and slid upwards until it was resting possessively on her thigh. The kiss deepened as Naomi allowed her fingers to tangle into Lauren's hair, twirling the strands around her fingers and tugging a little, an involuntary sound rewarding the action.
Lauren's other hand moved to cup Naomi's jaw and Naomi swore she melted right then. She couldn't believe this was really happening. Right now. Right here. This was where she was meant to be.
Lauren's hands looped around Naomi's lower back, fingers just barely touching the exposed skin at the hem of her shirt, tugging it up just a little when Naomi breathed shakily into Lauren's ear. She heard Lauren's breathless giggle as she sat back, running a slightly shaking hand through her wild hair.
The rest of their night was a combination of drinking and exchanging stories that got infinitely funnier the more they drank.
Naomi especially couldn't get enough of Lauren's laugh. She felt more drunk on that sound than the pale blue liquid she kept sipping at, relishing the burn in her throat now. She was completely convinced that Lauren's angelic laugh was the sound you would hear once you entered Heaven.
But she didn't voice this intensely private thought - it was far too intimate for them, for how fresh all these feelings were. She didn't want to scare her away - but she also knew she would never feel as strongly about any other girl as she did about Lauren.
She had been blessed with an angel - and she was never going to let her go.
