Nolan Reed spent hours upon hours staring at the now colourful coffee mug he held in his hands. He observed it closely. His father's work mug with the words, "Communique papers- the news that matters to you" was now black and yellow.
In a world that is supposed to be colourless, this was not normal. At first, it was his best mate's scarf two days ago. Then it was the coffee mug yesterday morning.
Nolan decided that this had been going on long enough and wanted answers. But whenever he tried to tell someone, they would act like he is crazy. Could they not see it?
The only people that had ever mentioned "colour" was Aunt Rhonda and Uncle Mike. He hadn't seen them since he was 7 years old. Now he had just turned 20. Back then, they told him stories about colours and how beautiful they were. Everyone else just thought they were some nutty old couple. Now that he thought about it, maybe his parents did too.
But it was either them or nothing and Nolan wanted to find out more about this strange "colour" phenomenon.
-------------------
"Drink up deary, it's good for you," Aunt Rhonda prompted.
Nolan just nodded and tried his best to look like he was enjoying Aunt Rhonda's homemade tea. He set the cup down and cleared his throat.
"So, Aunt Rhonda, Uncle Mike. Do you remember when I was little you told me stories about colour?" Nolan asked, his relatives exchanged excited looks and leaned in.
"Well," He paused, reached into his bag and pulled out the coffee mug.
"I don't know if you can see this but lately--" Nolan started but was cut off by Uncle Mike before he could finish.
"Of course we can see it, boy!".
"I knew this would happen! I knew it!" Aunt Rhonda giggled.
"You've found your soulmate! That's why we can see colour. Your Uncle and I were lucky enough to find each other," Aunt Rhonda smiled and squeezed Uncle's hand.
"..Soulmate?" Nolan looked at the two strangely.
"Your parents haven't told you?" Aunt Rhonda asked surprised.
"No, they haven't been on very good terms lately.."
"Of course not, they never were meant for each other," Aunt Rhonda sighed.
"But don't worry kiddo, we'll tell you everything," Uncle Mike reassured and sat down at the table.
------------------
Nolan had a million thoughts buzzing around his head as we walked home from Aunt Rhonda's.
Everyone has a soulmate. When you've come in contact or witnessed that specific person, the world would start to drop hints on how to find them. The scarf, the coffee mug, they were only the start and Aunt Rhonda said that more would be revealed later on. The downside, everyone only gets a certain amount of time to find that person, a week at most. If they're not found it's goodbye brightness and hello black and white. Nolan had lived his whole life in the same lifeless world. Now that he had been given the opportunity to change that, he wasn't going to fail like his parents did.
A big grin formed on Nolan's face, he felt so happy, he could skip the whole way home. He didn't, of course. He figured that would be a strange sight for bystanders.
Nolan returned home to see that his friend was still sitting on the couch, he had been there for weeks now and seemed pretty down lately. He wouldn't say why, just stare blankly ahead of him.
Dan asked why he was so happy and Nolan explained everything that his Aunt and Uncle had told him.
"Lucky you~" Dan said coldly.
"That's not like him," Nolan thought but decided to shrug it off.
Nolan suddenly froze as his view of the living room was replaced with a blurry vision of a girl, the same age as him, picking up a suitcase and boarding a train.
He wanted to get a better look at the mysterious girl but the vision ended.
That night, Nolan spent hours searching the web for the trains that departed from platform 7. The girl entered the train on the right, had brunette hair and carried a brown leather suitcase.
He now only had two days to get to her.
In the morning, whilst packing some bags, Dan had got off the couch for the first time in ages and walked over. Nolan explained the vision he had and his plan. To his surprise, his friend didn't think he was a lunatic and volunteered to drive him to the station.
The journey ahead was a one day drive from his hometown to the city.
--------------------
"Hey Dan, could you take the next shift?", Nolan asked as he walked out of the gas station and tossed Dan the keys.
"Sure,"
Just as Nolan opened the passenger seat door, Dan pushed him with all his might, sending him to the ground.
"Sorry Nol, I can't let you do this," said Dan in a bitter tone.
He closed the door and sped off.
Leaving Nolan in the middle of nowhere, with nothing. He called once on the public phone, then again but no answer.
He would have to walk.
It was now morning, the last day. Nolan's feet ached every step he took. A car sped up to him and Nolan saw that the driver was Dan.
"Need a lift?" He asked and opened the door.
Nolan accepted and found out that Dan recently lost his soulmate and was jealous that he had found his.
"Ok, we've got to hurry,"
Three hours later, they arrived at the station.
"Nol! Go get her," Dan smiled.
With that, Nolan rushed into the station to platform 7. He ran through multiple stairs and pushed through the crowds just in the nick of time to see a girl, grabbing a suitcase to board a train. Suddenly, a name he had never heard of popped into his mind.
"Stop!"
"Jocelyn!" To his relief, the girl turned around.
"Nolan," the girl replied.
