...No! Nora? Nora! Wake up! Please...
Nora wasn't in the village anymore. She was in the orphanage at 8 years old again, standing next to 10 year old Ren, who was completely expressionless as they watched the bandits raid their "home". She felt the tears running down her face as she looked at him in shock.
"Renny? What are they doing to the orphanage?"
He looked back, a slight anger in his eyes as he looked at the bandits. "I don't know, Nora. I think it would be best if we left."
Little Nora gasped. "Leave our home? All of these people have been so..."
She was about to say kind, but the word caught in her throat. None of them cared whether Nora lived or died. They had herded all the other kids out and left her in the room. If Ren hadn't jumped through her window, she would have been killed.
He put a hand on her shoulder and waved a hand towards the trees, where their bags sat. "You don't have to lie to yourself anymore, Nora. I've known they were coming for days. You can see the smoke from my window."
Just then, a bandit leaped out of the tree next to them and knocked Ren down. Nora screamed at the bandit as Ren hit the ground and pulled her hammer off of her back. Swinging it, she brought Magnhild down on the bandit's head. Ren struggled to his feet and watched in pure awe as the bandit slumped to the ground and didn't move again.
Nora turned to him, a big smile on her face. As she looked at the bandit with pure disgust on her innocent face, she spotted a symbol on his back. It was a half circle with a thick dot in the place where the rest of the circle was supposed to go. Ren evidently recognized it, and shook his head sadly. Nora gasped. "Ren...You don't mean...These can't be the same bandits!"
Her best friend nodded. "Nora...The bandit you just hammered is from the same group that killed our parents."
Present Nora blinked slowly awake as Past Nora slumped to the ground. Present Ren, Jaune, and Ruby were all standing there, looking worried. Ren looked at her with relief as he saw she was awake. "Nora! Thank dust, we thought you..."
She sighed. "Did I pass out again? Every time I see that symbol, I..."
Jaune looked like he was going to be sick, and Ruby put a hand on his shoulder. "Thank dust you woke up, poor Jaune almost ran."
Jaune looked down at her with a expression that Nora had seen him wearing a lot lately. He wasn't prepared to lose anyone else. That tightened Nora's resolve. She wouldn't die as long as Jaune was there.
Ren sighed as he helped Nora up. She was still not strong enough to withstand that symbol.
A week later, the bandits returned. Nora had split from the group to scout out the area ahead, and Ren was waiting, scroll open, for her all clear.
Ruby was slowly cutting a piece of loose wood from a cabin, and Jaune was pacing, clutching his sword and shield like they were his lifeline.
Suddenly, a piercing scream rang out, and they all jumped to their feet. Ren pulled out his blades and looked in the direction of the scream. "Nora!"
Ruby reached a hand out to stop him, but he ran as fast as he could towards his friend.
He came into a square of land in which there were no houses, and saw a group of bandits, one of them with a blade in Nora's back. Ren stared in shock, then shook his head and ran at the bandits. He jumped into the air as the bandit holding Nora dropped her in surprise. Rage took over, and Ren jumped into the air, readying his blades to attack. He pulled back his arm and spun down towards Nora's attackers, who all drew their weapons as well and charged at him. He didn't give them a chance to strike. Ren spun through their lines, killing all of them. When he landed, Nora groaned quietly from where she lay on the ground. He knelt by her, cradling her body silently as she smiled at him. He noticed her aura glowing pink, and her muscles were slightly vibrating.
"R...Ren? You were supposed to...wait for my signal...you...dummy."
He smiled despite himself. "I promised I would always be there, no matter what you said otherwise, didn't I?"
Nora giggled, and sat up in Ren's arms slowly. She took his hand in her own and brought it to the symbol on her back. She shivered when he touched it.
"That's where the bandit stabbed me. I'm okay, Ren. I think they recognized me from the orphanage."
He nodded, pulling his hand away from her back. "Well, now you're charged up. What are we going to do with that energy?"
Nora looked over to the left. "The rest of the bandits are over there, Ren."
She tilted her head inquisitively, and Ren smiled. "Go."
His best friend squealed happily and leapt into the air, retrieving her hammer and speeding after the bandits.
Ren watched her go, a smile on his face. Ruby and Jaune ran up, and Ruby touched Ren's shoulder lightly.
"Ren? Are you okay?"
Jaune came up to his other side. "Where's Nora?"
Ren waved a hand. "She's...fine. She's eliminating the remaining bandits."
Ruby nodded. "Okay, so what was that scream?"
Her teammate laughed softly. "Nora was hit where her symbol is. She's fine now, it was just a shock."
Jaune sighed with utter relief. "Thank dust...I couldn't handle it if..."
Ruby put her hand on Jaune's shoulder. "I know."
When Nora came back, she was panting slightly, and there was a hint of blood around her symbol, but she covered it up, smiling weakly at them. Ren saw right through her expression and pulled her aside when Ruby and Jaune went on ahead.
"Nora...Are you okay? You're bleeding."
She brushed him off. "I'm fine, Ren."
He frowned at her. "You're not. I can see your expression. I'll get my first aid kit."
Nora sat down on the stump of a tree with a good-natured huff as Ren went to his bag. When he came back, Nora had taken her coat off, revealing the bloody symbol underneath.
Ren inhaled as he began to treat her wound. "Nora...you shouldn't have run ahead. I should have said something, or gone with you..."
She put a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Ren...what happened wasn't your fault."
He shook his head. "You could have been killed!"
"Then it's a good thing we put the symbol where we did, huh?" Nora smiled at him, and winced slightly as Ren finished. "Boop!"
Ren smiled as her nose touched his. "Boop."
Their teammates stood off to the right, Ruby smiling uncontrollably, and Jaune looking happy but sad at the same time.
When the two separated, Nora looked back at Ruby, who winked cheekily and began to laugh behind her hand. Nora frowned, but started to giggle too. Ren looked confused, but he was smiling, a hint of pink highlighting his cheeks.
All righty, so this chapter was kinda dark, but I liked it. (Yes, I'm a terrible person. Live with it c:) Next chapter coming up!
