Chapter 3

When a person dreams their brain is taking things and mashing them together to create a slideshow of possibilities, hopes or even impossible ideas that could never come true. But when the person wakes up the dream turns into dust and only small fragments stay to collect in their memory.

As my eyelids fluttered open, I felt my mind do a back flip as pieces of my slide show flickered through my memory. The dull blues and faint yelps sank into my curiosity as I started to sit up. As I struggled to remember any events created in my mind, I noticed that nobody was awake. It was well passed noon. I’m guessing the bedside cups played a part in this.

With eyes closed and logic shutdown I slipped off the thin, yet plush mattress, and started out of the room with long strides.

One. Two. . . Ten. .

I stopped and sighed because I was not even close to the threshold yet. Calming down, I finished my small walk to the door frame and left the beds to rest behind me.

Creeping is not a skill I obtain. As the new, shiny floor made my covered feet slide, I found the main hall that leads to the exit. Glancing around in fear of being found, I saw movement to my left and realized it was my hair flipping from the force of turning my head.

BUZZ!

I jumped and lost my footing making me collapse on the slick floor. Thunk! I closed my eyes and silently hoped nobody was a light sleeper.

Andrew- Good morning little Maya! Are you ready for the update?

Sighing I realized he had no idea I had left the room. This building is one of the only ones that have chatting available to anyone in the whole building. Climbing to my feet, I moved faster than before and was soon standing by the bus outside of the industry. I reached my walking limit exactly. Ignoring the slight shock in my hand, I boarded the bus.

***

Calvin- I need help May.

Me- I don't care one bit about your 'needs'. Forget it I'm not the person you should ask. I have my own issues. Let me be.

Calvin- You don't get it. You're the only one I can trust.

Me- I said leave me be. If you want to 'chat' then go to the 8th.

Calvin- See you soon, sis.

Sis? He was removed from my family list the day he left. Stupid. Ignorant and absurd. Only he would longate a chat. Anyone can read a longate. Anyone. That is why almost nobody chats outside of being in the same room. Once typed, there is no way of grasping the words back.

I shifted as time soared and twisted without skipping a beat. The bus had dropped me off at a rundown store on 8th. It was the only store down this drag. How Oxford never noticed me escape is beyond me. Who knows, maybe he watched me escape.

Ding!

My screen popped up with a new person alert. Someone has entered. Slowly standing, I stretched my eyes to find the brother, who was supposed to be deceased to me, standing by the door. Eyes locked with mine, I scurried past him and out the door hoping he'd get the hint.

The patter of his feet fell in sync with mine as we rounded a corner and came to a stop outside my apartment. I glanced sideways to find him discreetly watching my movements. I flew up the stairs and unlocked the door before sliding in, Calvin close behind.

BUZZ!

Calvin- Nice place. It's been, what, nine years?

I stared at him while he typed away. He was captured too. His tongue useless, his eyes red and his fingers swollen.

Me- What do you want?

Calvin- I see how it is. I just wanted help.

Irritated, I smacked his left hand down and made him look at me in the eyes. Shaking my head, I pushed him towards he door.

Me- I know where this is going. Just leave and shack back up with that ratty girl. You shouldn't even be here. You got banned remember? One more thing, if you ever, and I mean EVER, longate a chat again it will not be pretty.

Calvin-What do you take me as? I just wanted to know where mom and dad are. Is that so hard to find out? I want to see my family and you're the only one that knows where everyone is. Plus I have some business to discuss with dad.

Me- It’s my job to know where people are.

Calvin- Tell me.

Me- Mom is where you've last saw her. Dad left.

Calvin- What do you mean by 'left'.

Me- As in, left the radar. Now get out.

I was pushing him out my door the same time five guards rushed into my house with electro-fibers on. They were a moving, unstoppable and indestructible pack of defense. I witnessed Calvin smirking at me before his plain outfit turned into a matching, blue, self shielded body suit. It was like a high tech onesie. Black lenses slid over his eyes and then he turned to one of the men. After nodding to me, I felt one man enclose my wrists together with a stringy, yet imposable to escape, substance before it hardened, locking my limbs in place.

Words lit up Calvin's chest.

One good thing about you is that dad never let you off the hook.

Another man came into my vision and held up his right fist which had screens coated to his entire hand. He barely touched my face and I sank into the ground as if being pulled down by an unknown force. Before I knew it everything was developed into a mind ridden slideshow.
