The doctor watched her quietly for a moment as she moved her pen furiously over a page in her precious notebook. Her brow was creased in her intense concentration and the edge of her tongue poked out from the side of her lips.
He had no doubt she wasn't idly writing or sketching-No, her notebook was far more than that. It was her own personal dictionary of clues, ideas, constellations, information....her guide to her vendetta. The bible of her self-proclaimed mission-to find her family.
His stomach twisted at that thought. He had been trying-not intentionally- to delay this mission. She had such a wonderful sense of...wonder. In a way, he had been testing her, seeing if was tough enough and really willing enough to do what she had set out to do....and so far, she had done nothing but surprise him. This small package of a young lady with such quiet fierceness, iron determination and gentle heart.
He drummed his fingers on the console panel.
Just one more trip....one more, it won't hurt. She needs a little fun...he needed to see her awe and marvel with brand new eyes at all the things he could show her...just one more time. Before things got serious. He'd promised.
"Christmas!" He blurted out suddenly.
"Hmm?" She barely even raised her eyes.
"How do you like christmas Kitty?" He gave her a wide grin from under his messy brown hair, even though she didn't see it.
"Not that bothered really, why? Are we in a 'christmas' time zone or something?"
"Awww come one-everyone likes a bit of christmas! Cold weather, warm jumpers, hats, scarves, christmas lights..oooh and SOCKS! New pairs of socks in your stocking on christmas morning!? Got to love new socks!"
She let her notebook fall into her lap and she gave him a tired sigh. Her expression one that told him she thought he was being silly. "I grew up in a children's care home-remember?"
"Come on Kitty! Can't have been that bad...." He tried to smile again although he felt a little deflated.
"Sure." she said flatly, raising her notebook again.
"You know..." he licked his lips as he wandered away from the console towards her "There's an entire planet dedicated to Christmas...."
He heard her short snort of laughter.
"I'm serious. An entire planet-it's an ice giant....temperatures always between -14 and 8 degrees celsius...constant snow....imported wild reindeer and spruce trees...."
"Sounds delightful." she mumbled.
"Ooooh it's brilliant!" he swiped her notebook from her hand, grinning at her.
"Oi!" She protested
"We can go ice skating on the largest frozen lake in the galaxy....drink hot chocolate under giant christmas trees....feed reindeers.....see elves..."
She rose an eyebrow "Elves?"
"Alright, they aren't really elves but they are short and...uhh pointy. They've adopted the christmas lifestyle so much so that it's practically thier entire culture."
She STILL didn't look impressed.
"Look, I PROMISE you...it's not something you want to miss....." he let that hang there for a moment before adding "Besides, if you've never had a proper christmas....."
"I did. When I had a family, Doctor. A family you promised you would help me find."
"Aaaand I will....After Christmas!" He bounded away to the console before she could protest anymore "Find a winter coat Kitty we are going to Kanakaloka!"
