While the Lim household, sans the two males, slumbered on, Maya found herself unable to sleep. After much twisting and turning, she finally got up in fear of waking her son up because of her continuous moving. Her son.
Sitting in the makeshift living room of their unit, she remembered what had happened that day…
—
Ring ring ring.
“Naku po, ang aga-aga naman…” A hand shot out from under the blankets, blindly grasping for a ringing phone. “Bakit wala sa dresser ko…”
Ring ring ring.
The sound was coming from under the bed. She reached over and teetered over the edge of the bed but was able to get it.
“4am ang aga naman.” She clicked the answer button from under the blanket. “Hello po?”
An authoritative voice answered her. “Good morning Maya.”
“Good morning Ms Belmonte.” Maya suddenly shot up from the bed and sat up, not minding her alcohol-induced throbbing headache.
“I’m sorry for calling you so early on a weekend but I’m afraid we need extra hands today.” Her boss’ voice sounded almost apologetic.
“Ano po yun?” Maya gripped the blanket tighter.
“Nagkaroon ng flu outbreak dun sa isang boardinghouse malapit dito. Ilang FA rin from TA ang doon naninirahan. In line with that and given that it is the weekend, we need all the manpower we can get. The management would rather err on the side of caution and not allow these FAs to report to work until they’ve been given a clean bill of health. So you’re probably wondering where you come in,” Zenaida Belmonte said. “We need FAs in training to stand in for them. Mind you, this is a big step. Actual na itong ipapaggawa ko sa inyo. Mas malaki ang repercussions kung sakaling magkamali ka. This is the real thing Maya, are you in or out?” She paused to give her student time to react. There was silence from the other side of the line. “Maya, andyan ka pa ba?”
“Opo ma’am, opo.” Maya hurriedly answered as her head tried to comprehend everything at the early hour. “Ibig pong sabihin parang magstewardess na ako?”
“Yes Maya.” Ms. Belmonte patiently replied.
“Punta na po ako dyan, in na in po ako Ma’am.”
“Great. Pack lightly Maya, you have to be ready for anything. We find ourselves in a situation in which manpower will be limited. There will still be supervision, yes. But we’ll be expecting you to conduct yourselves accordingly.”
“Yes ma’am. On my way ma’am.”
“Do not disappoint me Ms dela Rosa.”
The line went dead.
“Maya, totoo ba ito. Lilipad ka na!” Maya leaned back and held her hand on her forehead. “Pero bakit ngayon pa…” She slowly glanced at the other side of the bed and her eyes widened.
She hurriedly stood up, or tried to, but got tangled in the sheets. Maya ended up falling gracelessly on the floor, pulling a comforter and a pillow with her.
The man who was beside her spot on the bed just shifted. “Too early, sleep,” he murmured and continued to sleep.
She covered face in shock and peeked through her fingers as she slowly crawled to the bed. “Totoo ba ito Maya, baka naman panaginip lang talaga ito lahat. Lilipad ka na mamaya sa ere, kagabi…sa langit ka lumipad.” Her color heightened because of anxiety and something else she could not pinpoint. “Naku po, hindi na ako ulit iinom.”
