Anton tiptoed. He jumped. He stretched. He looked around in annoyance and pulled a chair to climb. Nonetheless, he was unable to reach his toothbrush. Why must his mother keep the toothbrush so far from him? He grunted and crossed in arms in irritation. Just then, two muscular arms reached from behind him.
Abruptly, he did an about face and was surprised to see the man who handed him his toothbrush.
“Tito?”

After Anton concluded his morning ablutions, Richard and Anton went back to Maya.
Maya was situated in the living room area. Different types of flyers and brochures were scattered on the coffee table. With one brochure in hand, she scribbled in a small black notebook.
Richard inched forward; he was too far away to recognize what the materials were for.
Sensing his approach, Maya looked up and quickly swept her hand across the table, effectively gathering the flyers and chucking it in a folder. “Tapos ka na baby?”
Richard was taken aback. Baby?
“Opo Mama.” Richard was brought back to reality when Anton answered.
Maya got up, handed him a towel and other toiletries. “Baka sakaling gusto mo na muna maghilamos rin o kaya mag-shower.”
Richard smiled at Maya’s naturally nurturing personality. “Thank you,” He nodded his thanks. “I think I’ll get my spare change of clothes from the car; start breakfast without me.”
Maya just tilted her head in acknowledgement and sat beside an eagerly waiting Anton.

After ensuring that he looked presentable enough, Richard emerged from the bathroom. He called his ever trusted secretary to give her instructions. “Hello Liza? Yes, I won’t go to the office today. I need to take care of something but give me a call if there’s any emergency.” After ironing out several more details, Richard ended the call and approached the dining room.
Maya had laid down three places on the dining table. In the center, there were plates of hotdogs, toasted bread, scrambled eggs and corned beef.
Richard smiled as he saw two cups of coffee and one cup of milk served for each of them. He sat down and started on his own breakfast.
Watching Maya feed Anton took him back to the days when it was Abby she was feeding. The manner in which she dealt with Abby was the same as the one she she dealt with her son. Truly, Maya was more than Abby’s nanny- she practically was the mother that Abby never met. She filled in an empty space. He reflected further as he chewed his food.
He had (in essence) abandoned her, accused her of various hurtful things and yet here she was (as she had been doing so for the past years) taking care of their son. Maya even brought him into her home out of concern for his well-being.
If only he could turn back time, if only he realized his feelings earlier, if only he acted quicker,if only he shelved his doubts, if only, if only… However, now is a time for action. If anything, one thing he learned in his years is that life is short. He had to change his tactics.
Seize the day, Richard. This is it.
“Anton, where do you want to go today?”
—
Maya closed her eyes for a moment.
The confusion she felt was tantamount to nothing she experienced before.
Ano na nga ba? Ano na nga ba ang mangyayari?
The reality that Anton is her son as well as Richard’s never hit her as strongly as it did now that she was watching them talk about what they wanted to do for the day. A combination of unexplained fear and thrill coursed through her.
