We used to be a complete and happy family. With a father and a mother who cared about us and promised they'd never leave us. With a brother that acted like an actual brother and not a parent. With a sixteen-year old girl that used to be fun and carefree.

But now, six months later, everything is different. Our parents broke their promise and left, my brother acts like my parent, and I'm no longer sixteen and carefree, but seventeen and reserved.

It all happened too fast. One minute they were with us, laughing and playing around, the next all their stuff was gone and so were they. They hadn't left anything saying where they went and if they were gonna return. Luke, Harry, and I assumed the worst. We notified the police about their disappearance, but they didn't do anything except give my brother full custody over me. Some cops.

Over time my sadness quickly turned into anger, believing my parents had left us on purpose. Anger at them for breaking their promise, and turning my nineteen-year old brother into someone with too many responsibilities he pretends he can handle. But I know that the moment I'm not around, he breaks down from all the stress. Harry tries to help him out, but he says he has everything under control. The three of us know he's lying.

I know Luke and Harry are looking at me to see my reaction, so I try too look happy at the thought of my parents calling and being alive. But I can't. I remember how they left six months ago without thinking about even giving us a short call. They had all that time, but for me their time was over the moment I got filled with anger.

"I don't give a damn about what they have to say."

Luke and Harry shared a knowing glance then turned to me, "I know you are somewhat upse-," Harry started to say, but I soon interrupted.

"Somewhat upset!? They abandoned me and Luke and you think I'm 'somewhat' upset!," I yelled.

"Listen Rose, dad never wanted to leave us. He only had to. Because of mom, and for our protection."

I gaped at Luke, not believing what he had just said, "What do you mean 'because of mom'?"

His eyes widened as he realized what he had just said, "Umm....what do yo- you know what? We'll talk about that later. You just have to understand that what dad did was for our protection."

I narrowed my eyes at him, "How am I supposed to understand when you're saying we'll talk about it later! I won't understand until you TELL me! And let me guess, you're gonna explain your red eyes later too!?"

"Listen Rose, Luke looks like he's really trying here. The least you could do is calm down and let him explain," Harry cut in looking back and forth between Luke and I.

"Rose, dad wants you to call him later. He wants to explain everything to you," Luke said.

Does he really think I'm gonna talk to dad that easily? If he does, he needs to get his damned mind checked, "Let him tell his crappy stories to someone else. I'm late for school," I walked passed Luke and towards the door, grabbing my blue backpack on my way.

I walked out the door, the cold Montana air blowing across my face.  I looked up at the sky noticing it was a grayish color. Winter had just started, and we would be receiving snow soon.

I was starting to get a headache so I needed to calm down so it wouldn't get worse. I wanted to forget what just happened in there, but a little voice in my head wouldn't let me. "Dad called," it said "he actually cares." I mentally shook myself. There was in no way he would care about us. He and mom left us and never called.
