After examining the man for a moment, and his reassurance it wasn’t his time yet, he did as instructed. Without warning and with such a suddenness he hadn’t expected, a strange object fastened itself to his wrist. He had to pull back his sleeve to see it. But on doing so, he saw what looked like a man’s wrist watch. (About the same size as an expensive model; one that would have had good quality workmanship inside of it for the 1970s) But that was where all similarity parted. Because this was like smooth glass –like crystal, that pulsated red or a dark orange like light, and had secured very firmly a glass like band around his left wrist. That had seemed to suss out, as if through intelligence, how tight it needed to fit on, without causing discomfort.
“Just wait a few seconds?”
He did, observing too the same icon was also blinking on the device. And then with the same suddenness it had appeared, it vanished, leaving his nerves under his skin still a little tingling, after the physical thing that had been there only seconds before.
“You can choose any of those icons to the right, and you’ll get the same result. Seems it needs some access code or something?” When the man was saying this, he was examining where it had rested, checking for some skin damage, encase it had penetrated the skin. For all he knew injecting some toxin. But he saw no such damage.
“If you press the blue dot top right, it does something even more spectacular Father. And I think it also gives answers about where they come from. My own reckoning is, possibly they are travellers into their past, like we might book some exotic location for a holiday. And this contraption gives them all they require to survive in the era they choose. Could explain too why if one, two got lost, people there wouldn’t think too much about it.” Again the man instructed the priest to press the button, and as soon as he did, the previous thing with the watch like object seemed tiny in comparison, compared to what happened then.
The icons on the screen weren’t just touch sensitive, he realized afterwards, after he had returned to his home. Even though, when he touched the icon that transported the bracelet, or watch like object to his wrist, he had thought that.
But now, he understood this device was far, far more exceptional – for when it was found back in 1947 –it was actually able to predict his actions. It was self learning. Becoming a part of him? He assumed the end result would be he wouldn’t even have to touch the face. Quite possibly with practice, he could keep it in his pocket, think mentally of the function, and the device would provide it. He assumed it was designed for a race –possibly humanoid –that were far more developed telepathically. He also drew to the conclusion soon afterwards, after he had left that man’s home after giving him Last Rites, that it was intelligent, alive! An A.I. (artificial intelligence) device! Even for the late 1970s, he knew what he had in his possession, was something only some writer might have dreamt up in his imagination for some science fiction story. Even the most advanced sections: The British MI5 or US CIA –had nothing like this. This made stories about time travel trivial in comparison.
What scared him though afterwards: if the US Military had such technology? What were they doing with it? He somehow doubted the boys in military green were just playing parlour tricks with the technology? Laughing amongst themselves as they teleported some future item to their timeline? What was more worrying to the priest, they had as far back as 1947 to play about with it. (Maybe even longer if the Vatican was assisting them? As they had technology going as far back as the Crusades, no doubt) And that gave them twenty five years to ingest, maybe reverse engineer the technology –and somehow that was a worry thought for him. Because if a lone man had found this outside of the craft, lost as he believed after the crew had possibly boarded an escape vehicle to escape the doomed spaceship –what wonders had been uncovered in the truckloads Sean said the military had departed the scene with?
