He remembered it was two days later, he contacted the bishop, and the bishop had in turn passed the matter on to the cardinals.  The end result been a week later he was instructed to fly to Rome, and to show the Papa in person this futuristic contraption.

He remembered on his arrival in the spacious room with such beautiful golden painted furniture, the cardinals had asked him to sit and the Papa (Pope Paul VI) would be with him shortly.  An hour later, a cardinal in a bright purple suit of office accompanied the Pope into the room through large white doors, looking like they were having a quiet innocent chat. After they sat, the cardinal positioned by his side spoke in English, with a definite Italian accent, “Please-a, can the Holy Papa see what you bring to show-a too us?” He saw the Pope looking at him, aged, like a child might look at presents beneath a Christmas tree –with that same enthusiasm in his old eyes.

“Your Eminence, it only operates for the person physically holding it.”

He saw the cardinal whispering something to him, “Please, the Holy Papa would like-a to hold it.  Maybe you could then provide-a instruction to help. Yes?”

And with that, with both their warm smiles, he walked across the large room to hand the device to the cardinal, who in turn parted it to the Pope, as the other cardinals watched just as anxious in seats farther off to the right.

“So what must the Holy Papa do-a now?”

He was still standing next to them when he spoke, “If his Eminence lightly touches any of the objects to the right –which represent futuristic tools, they will be teleported to any person physically attached to the device.”

The cardinal explained this.  And seconds later a look of astonishment, went to acceptance to laughter, as a device like a light blue cube spun in front of both the Papa and the cardinal next to him. The cube turned then to a pulsing red, like the low red glow in a dying coal fire.  And then settled into black, at which point it stopped spinning altogether.  At this point the Papa tried to touch it with his hand, as all the cardinals watched on mesmerised. But before he could grab the cube now coal black –which was about the size of a Roubaix cube.  It vanished.

All looked like they had been cheated from the booty.  The Papa with his old eyes looked up at him then for an explanation.  To which he gave one.  “I’m sorry Your Imminence.  I should have explained the items can’t stay in our time for long.  Not sure why.  The person who entrusted the device to me believed it had something to do with an access code.  I haven’t thought of any better explanation.  All I know after about ten seconds, they art teleported back.”

The cardinal translated this to the Pope, and he saw the Pope nod with the explanation.   And then like an adventurous child he saw the old man again examining the face of the device.  And seconds later a javelin the colour of bright surgical steel appeared about four feet in length –right in front of the Papa and about two feet from where he was still standing.  He saw it had a roaming blue colour band, a thin strip, which ran from one sharp tip to the other.  The object didn’t rotate.  If it had it would have been traitorous to all three of them.  As he guessed how it was shaped, it could easily have inflected lethal cuts.

Like the other, this also decayed and faded.  Things never just vanished like you see in old sitcoms like Bewitched –from the sixties.  They kind of atomized, and then bit by bit seemed to dissolve. But it happened very quickly.

For like ten more minutes, he watched the Pope entertaining himself and laughing, like he was playing with some new toy of immense interest.  Watching objects appear and dissolve.  Then the cardinal asked, as he stood obediently next to them, “The Holy Papa wishes to know now, can-a he do other things with it?”
