Those thoughts materialize after he had gone back home. And slowly like a cancer grew in him with a malignancy, eating at his consequence, persuading him to do the right thing. Which for a priest with a powerful vocation to God, and very strict views about right and wrong, were to seek the advice of his superiors –thinking they were all knowing and good and decent people? But as far as he was concerned now, they, right up to the Vatican, only wished one thing, too suppress the knowledge, and make damned sure no member of the public ever came wind of it! That was why when he looked back and thought about his youth, he was a very naive individual in many ways! Thinking the church was as they preached!
But if he had considered the matter deeper, he should have realized his Order were never the good Samaritans. They were really frightened people who feared change –but who accepted it when their ideals became outdated with scientific advances. People too who locked themselves behind big heavy doors and covered their ears, when suffering souls cried out to them –the Vatican, for God’s intervention, like at the time when Nazi supporters sent so many people to their deaths, as Hitler grabbed hold of more and more territory. All that should have made the priest aware of his Vocation’s response. But as he realized, sadly, he was just too naive a man back then.
But as of that moment, he was still standing next to the man’s bed, holding this strange device, that only minutes before had teleported the bracelet or watch like thing to his wrist. “Go on Father; touch the little bright blue button to the left.” The man said again, after giving him his explanation where he felt this technology came from.
Instantly a holographic window projected out before him. He saw two worlds spinning at the top of a window which measured like in a box about four feet on all sides –meaning it took up a good proportion of the room. He quickly recognized –even with the spectacular images beneath, that one world was his time line in 1978 and the one next to it on the left was the future timeline in 2432 – as each had the year above the spinning blue atlas. Making it four hundred and fifty four years in his future!
Beneath were images, animated, constantly changing, showing humans in odd dress, in what looked like varying sections of that timeline? He would later decide it was more like the internet. Like how one sees various news items on sites like yahoo.com. But this was away more advanced. He saw language, but it wasn’t English. If he had to pick a language: He might have chosen Hindi. But that didn’t say it was Hindi either –just looked somewhat similar to it. Was it an indicator that the leading powers four hundred and fifty four years in his future were all changed?
Had something astronomical occurred to cause this? A major War, which had shifted the Powers in that future world? Looking at all this information travelling to him from a future which was but a question mark was truly mind blowing! He thought it might have even been as simple as, that the time travellers, historians, or tourist seeking past attractions –or whatever these people were –just departed into the past from different countries. Maybe in that timeline time travel wasn’t just something reserved for military purposes. His mind just couldn’t decide?
“Think it keeps the traveller in touch with what’s happening at home,” he smiled faintly, as more and more of his life force drained away.
“Unbelievable.”
“If you touch any of the boxes, they open out with other options. I could never get around it,” the man offered confused. “But I did work out it’s from four hundred years in our future. Found too like with the teleportation of objects, it locks you out from fully getting into its functions. But I always believed a smart man could get around that. Was also aware, as was O’Malley, the wrong smart person could do really bad things with this technology –a thing which comes from as far off in our time as it does? When you think of it Father? All our advances really only come from the beginning of this century? Think how far our world will have changed in 2078?”
The priest, nodded, and smiled, “Only hope there will still be a place for God in people’s hearts?”
