Ch 1: Grace

Most people think we are sisters, and we practically are. We live together in the same house. We moved out at 17 having both completed high school early and moved to a small town to fulfill our horse ranch owning dreams. Her parents died in a tragic car accident, mine had a lot of family problems and ended up splitting up. We decided to take out some loans from rich relatives and purchase a farm house on a 40 acre horse ranch. We both work day and night trying to keep up with the expenses of ranch life. We can't afford much but we are making it.

"Thank you! Come again soon, dear!"

"Bye! Thank you!" I said to Everett, the general store manager, as I left with 5lbs of rice. We ate cheap, long-lasting, filling foods like rice because we were broke. It was hard for me to get a job as a vet tech with little experience and no training, but I was a natural and somehow got the job.

I stuffed the rice into Aqua's saddle bag. Aqua is my best friend whom I acquired from an animal shelter when she was just a foal. I barley had enough to get her, but she spoke to me and I couldn't leave without her.

When I arrived home, Kennedy was arriving at the same time. She drives our rattled, cheapest cash car to work since you can't board a horse at a bookstore while working.

She turned around and smiled at me before going inside. I caught a glimpse of Ethan, a local farm hand who helps us on our farm out of the good of his heart whenever he gets a chance.

He had been watching Kennedy. I rode over to him.

"Watch where you put those eyes." I teased, "Wondering eyes are dangerous when I'm watching." He laughed

"I know. Do you think she likes me yet?" he asked as he continued to pull weeds.

"I couldn't say. But if you want her to notice you more maybe you should have an actual full conversation with her," I said sarcastically. Then I added, "Take her out somewhere. She needs to have a break and a good time. Or just go riding with her. She would love that." I finished smiling encouragingly at him.

"I suppose you're right...Well I had better get going. I have chores of my own to do."

"See ya!" I said as I rode to the barn.

When I got there, Kennedy was picking her horse's hooves.

            "Hey" she said.

"Hey. How is Sparrow this evening?" I asked.

"Good. Got a pebble in his hoof though. And hay in his mane."

"He is so silly" I laughed.

            "How is Aqua?" she asked.

"Good. We went to get some rice after work."

"You are so lucky the vet has a boarding stable so you can see him all day."

"Well I guess I am lucky then, huh?" I replied while petting Aqua on the neck.

"Are you done riding for the day? Or do you want to take a trail ride with me?" She asked.

"We can take a trail ride." I responded.

"Okay, just let me saddle her up and we'll be off." She said.
