Ch. 3: Kennedy

I woke up in a white walled room and beeping monitors. I looked down at myself and saw wires taped to me and bandages. I suddenly realized I was in a hospital, looking over at the window I saw Grace asleep and in the chair was Chase. I knew Chase liked her but he was to scared to admit so I smiled at myself silently thinking about how cute a couple they would make. I started slowly sitting up because I couldn't lay down anymore. I had no idea why I was at the hospital but I was and I didn't like it. Then everything came back to me;

Flashback:

I was upset. I couldn't stand rude people and this lady was really upset that I was all out of cookbooks when she's the only person who buys the books I have about cooking! I was driving home and once I got there I saw our door open and knew it Ethan. He had called me earlier saying that he was going to cook Grace and I a home-cooked meal for once and it sounded so good. I walked into the house smelling food and I instantly smiled. I saw Ethan cooking and went to my room and dropped all my stuff picking up my cowgirl hat and putting it on. As I walked out I almost ran into Ethan who looked concerned.

"Kennedy? What's wrong?"he asked

"Nothing. I'm just upset because of work. I was going to go for a ride real quick to clear my head."

"Why can't you just rest and talk to me?"

"Because I just need some air Ethan. Please."

I looked at him with pleading eyes since he was in my way to get to the door. He sighed and moved out of my way. I practically ran out the door to see Sparrow who greeted me with a nicker. I smiled and hugged him as he snorted at me knowing what I wanted to do. I saddled and bridled him, mounted him, and then I walked him out of the barn. It had already started snowing, I felt Sparrow shiver and move his head up and down. I patted his neck.

"Alright boy. Let's make this a quick ride before we get stuck out there."

I walked him to the back gate and opened it so we could get through. I then closed the gate before I rode off because lately I had heard a mountain lion's growl at night. Once I knew it was locked I took Sparrow down an overgrown path that connected our land and Mr. Draught's land. I was moving along with Sparrow's stride, feeling the mustang in his blood coming back out as we both came to life. We stopped in a clearing and decided to rest when Sparrow spooked and started walking around all skittish like. I tried to calm him down but it didn't work. All of the sudden I heard the growl and froze. The mountain lion was here and he wasn't happy that we were also here in his territory. My breathing became heavy as I looked around trying to see the faint glow of the cat's eyes. When I did, Sparrow had also seen them rearing up he threw me off and I landed on the ground. Sparrow ran a few ways away as the mountain lion attacked me. I held my arms up to try and block but instead of scratching me it bit me and I screamed in pain. I then heard Sparrow's high pitched neigh and the cat dropped my arm. I fell back and hit my head on the ground. I watched Sparrow fight the cat, the cat had got him good in the chest but other than that Sparrow had won trampling the thing to death. Once Sparrow knew it was dead he walked over to me and nudged me whining in my ear and pushing my hand with his nose. I looked at him and petted his nose softly.

"Sparrow. Go home."

He looked at me worried about leaving me behind and I smiled.

"Sparrow. Go home and get Grace. Please."

He immediately understood that I needed help and after licking my hand telling me to hold on and wait he darted off back to the ranch. I started crying, I looked at my arm, it was bleeding badly. I started feeling light-headed and my eyes began to close. I hoped that Sparrow would get there in time. I closed my eyes.
