The storm had begun with rain.  After an hour or so, it became a hurricane.  I insisted that my mother and brothers find safety as I attempted to be strong.  I had to be strong.  I had to protect them.

My mother used to be the one who told me that everything was going to be alright.  After father left, I took on that role.  I started learning to protect my family and do whatever I could to make things easier for my mother.

My house shook violently as the storm raged. It was not a normal hurricane; it had been summoned here, and I knew not by whom. My mother and siblings huddled in a corner as I tried to keep the house intact. I had insisted that they stay as safe as possible while I tried to fight the inevitable. The roof already had numerous holes in it, and the water was pouring in faster than I could get pans.

I had told my family to stay in the corner, where the ceiling was the strongest, but I knew it wouldn't hold for long. I threw yet another pot on the ground and the sound of the water dripping on the metal made my ears ring. They had to get to safety, surely if they left now they could get to the basement and I could keep it from caving in.

"MOTHER?" I yelled through the ringing and wind, trying to make it to the corner. "YOU MUST GET TO THE BASEMENT." My ears heard only the bitter wind and piercing ringing. I knew what had happened, but I decided not to believe it. As I ran to the door, I heard a loud creak and the ceiling caved in, blacking my vision. I had seconds of thought left, but I only wondered if my mother was alright.  She had to be alright.
