The girl's name was Delilah. She had been separated from her family, her friends, and everyone she once held dear. She was forced to start anew, just like Jasper. Through all of it, they had each other. And although they came from different places, they were able to work together to survive.
Delilah sat on the other side of the fire. The flames cast shadows on her face as they danced. "I used to be a Countess," she said, breaking the silence. "I used to help people. I used to try and get people what they needed. Now I feel so useless. I can't help them anymore. No one can."
"We can help each other," I said. "Who knows, maybe we'll get out of this, and you can help people again. You can't think of the storm as an ending, it could be a new beginning."
"I guess I'm just not very optimistic," she said. "Anyway... We have to reach the top of the mountain by sundown tomorrow. I don't know if the storm will go there, but it's the highest point we can get to. Are you prepared for the journey? Can you do it?"
"I think so," I said.
"You have to be sure," she said. "You have to be entirely ready to move on. Are you?"
"Yes," I said. "I am sure."
