How to Conceive the Idea of what to Write and How to Develop the Idea into a Book
In this chapter, we will be discussing how to get or conceive the idea or ideas of what to write and how to develop that very idea or ideas to becoming a readable material or book.I remembered when I handled my students in JSS Kayarda Kuje Abuja, Nigeria, on how to become a good writer or author, and one of the major questions they kept on asking, especially, new students who joined the lesson later was "Please sir, how can one get or conceive the idea of what to write and how can that idea be developed into a book?" When I discovered that good number of students have asked me same question severally, I then resolved not to just answer the questions, but to also handle the questions as a topic on its own, and this is to enable me do justice to the questions for the proper comprehensive understanding of my students. Hence, in this chapter also, I have resolved to handle and treat these two major questions as a topic on its own which will as well enable me do justice to them for proper comprehensive understanding of my readers.
1. How to Get or Conceive the Idea(s) of what or Theme to Write on
There are many ways one can conceive the idea or ideas of what to write, however, these following will be discussed in this chapter. They include: Reading other peoples' or writers books, From one's personal and daily experience, The experience of others witnessed or heard by someone, From teaching, especially a particular course or subject for good number of years and Through dreams or visions. These shall be discuss briefly in this chapter.i. Reading other authors books: "A good writer must be a good reader", however, this does not necessarily mean that the person must be a fast reader who can perhaps finish one book a day or many books in few weeks or months. By this I mean that a good writer or whoever that want's to be a good writer must be one who reads no matter how slow or few, but with a great rate of comprehensive and understanding abilities. The person must be one who can understand anything he/she reads and will be able to put the same down in his/her own words. Not a person that can finish many number of books in few time, but has low comprehensive and understanding ability to summarise in his/her own words all that he/she has read.
Firstly, reading other people's works or books can give one the idea or desire and as well as motivate one into becoming a writer to author book(s). Between my childhood and teenagehood periods, I can sit down and compose my own folk tales which I used to tell or narrate to my friends and senior friends. I was doing this without knowing that there was something (subject) called literature in English, offered in schools as subject, and without knowing that I can be a writer putting those thrilling stories in books as prose, drama, or poetry. I don't repeat my stories to the same people unless they are new set of persons. I always compose new stories everyday which I tells my friends and senior friends who were interested in my stories and the stories most often fetched me African salad with meat- called Nnsisa and Cander. However, when I went back to school after three years of staying at home as a result of lack of supportive aid (mostly financially), I read some novels which were Pregnant Virgin, Down the Lane, this was in my junior secondary school two (JSS2), however, in my JSS3, I read a book called 'Without a Silver Spoon', this book narrated in a story (prose) form the similar things that I had gone through and was also going through at that period. The story inspired me with the sense that I can be a writer, it was this book 'without a silver spoon' that motivated me into the desire, decision and determination of becoming a writer who will make positive and indelible mark in the world, especially, the world of writing. Note, the book did not gave me the idea of what to write or how to write, but it only gave me the idea that I can be a writer and motivated me into becoming a writer. Hence, reading other writers books is very important because it helps with creating into one the desire to become a writer and as well motivate one into becoming a good writer.
