Raphael pulled himself along, barely able to keep his feet under him. It was the middle of a hot, horrible summer with a lot of rain. Sweat beaded on his forehead and he lazily swiped away with his forearm. He was looking for work. Anyone could help him and everyone choose not to. He lugged himself up in front of the last door he was willing to try. A large mansion sprawled out before him. Surely someone in there could spare a few dollars. Raphael lifted his hand and knocked. There was no response for two agonizingly long seconds before the door cracked open. A maid held the door open and asked.
"Can I help you, sir?" Raphael's green eyes flitted this way and that.
"Are you the lady of the house?" He questioned. She shook her head with a smile.
"I wish I was. She's out back in the garden. I can take you to her."
"Thank you, miss." He sighed, praying that the lady of the house would be willing to give work. He wasn't much and didn't have much, but he was a hard worker. Raphael gawked at the art and architecture that encompassed him as he was lead through the winding halls to the back entrance.
"Here you are." The maid announced before opening the door for him. He gave her a polite smile and headed out. At first, he didn't see her, but when he finally noticed her... Raphael was dumbstruck.
The most beautiful goddess could not begin to compare to the woman before him. Tall and slender, she was sitting in a chair under a green umbrella tree, sipping tea and reading a book. Her long mahogany colored hair flowed down her back and her tan skin was flawless. Her amber eyes flitted intelligently over the words. She was so enraptured in her book that she hardly noticed him until he spoke, breaking loose from his euphoria.
"Ma'am?" Her head snapped up and her eyes met his.
"Yes? Can I help you?" She asked politely. He shifted his weight awkwardly, feeling so inferior compared to this woman.
"I'm looking for work. I don't have a family, so I can work long hours and I work hard too." He spilled out. She tilted her head and, marking her page, closed the book.
"Well, my name is Amira. Come here and sit and we can discuss this." He took a seat in the chair next to her. The sun suddenly looked like an orb of gold hovering just out of his reach. They talked until he asked.
"Would be okay if we just did this? Sat and talked for a little while. In exchange for your time, I can give you this smile." Amira smiled warmly and agreed saying.
"As long you promise not to break my fragile heart or leave me all alone."
"Promise."
