Did that really just happen?

"Well, well, well. What do we have here?" It was the second jerkiest of Lockman's Gang, Tyler. He had shaggy blonde hair, a rough build, and he always smelled strongly of colone.

He grabbed me by the scruff of my shirt. I could smell alcohol on his breath, and I nearly gagged. Drinking already? At - I checked my watch- 7:30 in the morning?

"Ty, bro, let 'em down. I want him to myself." Lockman walked over to me, just as Tyler dropped me. I stumbled, trying to regain my balance. "I'll give you to the count of five," he slurred. I could tell that he had also been drinking.

"One..."

I sprinted around to the back of the school, Alex right behind me.

"Two..."

We ran over to the basketball court and into some bushes, where we crouched, hiding.

"Five!"

"That bast-" I covered his mouth before he could give us away. In the process, I cut my hand on a branch.

"DAMMIT!" I yelled. I quickly covered my mouth, even though I knew that Lockman had heard us.

"Boo," he growled, right next to my ear. I closed my eyes, waiting for the pounding I knew I was about to receive.

What happened next changed my life forever.

I felt a tugging sensation in the pit of my stomach. I don't know how I knew to do what I did. I directed all of my energy toward Lockman, toward getting him away from us.

When the hit never came, I opened my eyes to see Lockman flying back, and smacking into a pole. Hard.

Then the school behind me exploded.
