Chapter 1

The rocks crackled beneath the car as it rolled past the large gates. The lock was left, broken and smashed on the dirty soil, as if someone had broken through it. That's a bit odd, I thought. And for some reason, I felt this feeling of uncertainty. I could hear my heart beating, and feel my chest get tighter. Finding it harder to breathe. The hair on the back off my neck stood up. That feeling was shaken off when the mansion came into view. It was more beautiful than anything I had ever seen. In the part of California that I'm from, these types of Victorian and art deco buildings are common but, I found something so mesmerizing about this house. The Heelshire's definitely took great care of it over the years. Its sharp-pointed roofs, its elegant green color with a white trimming, the porch that ran around the whole square, the hundreds of stained glassed windows, its unique structure, and the ginormity of it. Looked like something out of a storybook. Even though the car hadn't come to a complete stop, I eagerly swung the door open and hopped out. While trying to regain my balance, I made sure my camera was ready in hand.

" Miss! I hadn't parked the car yet!" Yelled the taxi driver.

" Sorry," I apologized, "Too much excitement, I wasn't thinking right."

"...Clearly," he mumbled under his breath.

He got my bags out of the truck and handed them to me.

" How much?" I asked.

" Thirty pounds."

I handed him two twenties, "Keep the change."

The man gave a warm smile, " Thank you, young lady. You have a good day now!" He said.

"You as well!" I replied.

As he settled back into the drivers seat of his car, about to drive off, I quickly knocked on his window and motioned him with circling hand movements. With a quizzical look and a furrowed brow, he rolled down his window.

" Sorry, before you go, I just wanted to ask you a few questions. It's for a documentary I'm filming, do you mind if I record you?"

" Well..." He glanced at his watch," Alright, ask away."

Even though I already knew the answers to these questions myself, I wanted to see if he knew something I didn't. I took at my camera and pointed it towards him, "So, to start...Has anyone been in this house since the Heelshire's died?"

"About a month ago," he explains, "before they were found, I remember hearing a young lady getting dropped off here. She was hired as Brahms' nanny. You know, the doll they pretended was their dead son. Not sure who else has been here."

" What happened to her?" I asked.

" Her name was Greta. She just left, never said a word about anything. Just like their grocery boy. Malcolm was his name."

" Where are they now?" I asked.

The driver itches at his scraggly beard, "Well, the two were awfully quiet about the whole thing. I heard they moved all the way to another country, the United States I believe...Is that all? I gotta get back to my duties."

I sighed as I hadn't learned any new info, "Sure, thanks."

After he drove off, I admired the mansion one more time, making sure to get good shots of the building. The reason why I was here is for a class project. Only one student is picked to go on a trip to another country each year to film a documentary and showcase it to the school. If students like it, it could be made into an actual documentary for the public. Out of the thousands of people in my film school, I was chosen. I flew all the way to England and am staying for about two to three months. This was a pretty big deal for me. I put the camera away and reached for the handle of the door. The door knob rattled as I tried to twist it open.

" Oh no," I sighed, "off to a great start."

I looked around, trying to find a spare key somewhere, but no luck. I took a seat on the steps and rested my chin on the palms of my hand. I took the camera back and recorded some stuff to make myself useful.

" It's only been three months since the death of Mr. and Mrs. Heelshire. Their bodies washed up on the shore and were found by a local who went out to surf. Their bodies have been just rotting away. Being eaten overtime by crabs and other sea creatures. Even sharks; munched on them down to the bone."

I turned the camera towards myself, "I, (y/n) (l/n), will hopefully uncover some mysteries of the Heelshire's. Maybe I'll see a little ghost action," I laughed, "A quick synopsis of them; Mr. and Mrs. Heelshire had a son named Brahms. He, from what I know, was very odd. At the age of 8, he had a friend who would come over to play. Her name was Emily. One day, she went missing. They had a search warrant for the Heelshire's and they found the body outback. Her head..Had been smashed by a rock. Brahms was listed as a possible suspect. By the time the cops arrived to question him, the house was set ablaze. I'm talking flames that ran up the walls and out the window, just everywhere. The Heelshire's made it out, but sadly, the son didn't. To cope with the death of their son, they bought a doll. This doll looked very similar to Brahms. They kept it and took care of it as if it really was their son. After, they hired a babysitter, to take care of the doll. Surprisingly she took the job and watched over him. But, something ended up happening and she left. Along with the grocery boy, who are together now, living far away from this place. A very, odd and tragic story."

I shut the camera off and tried the door one more time. I reached for the knob, twisted and pushed. The door easily came open which caught me by surprise. I gasped and jumped back a bit. How could that be? I swear it wasn't open before...After I calmed my breathing, I decided to step in. The inside was so dark, it was like looking into the abyss. I slid my hands over the walls, hoping to find the light switch. With no luck in finding it, I opened the door wider to let in the light. As soon as I did, the light reflected off something. I squinted to improve my vision a little and found out what it was. On the ground in front of me, with its legs straight out and arms to the sides, sat a pale, porcelain doll.
