It all began the day that you took Jamie out to the park to play. You often babysat the young, bubbly child while Mrs. Benet had to go out. You were 18 at the time so it wasn't much of a problem plus Jamie was a well-behaved kid and had an endless imagination. He always had something to be happy about, but when it snowed, he was on a whole different level of excited. He loved the snow and you never could figure out why.
You, on the other hand, were more of a logical thinker; you didn't want to seem like a grouch or anything, it was just hard to deny the facts. No single man can control snow, no man can fit down a chimney, a fairy doesn't take your teeth, rabbits have nothing to do with eggs, and no man puffs dust in your face to make you sleep. To you, these were all just figures that are made up to make kids happy.
This didn't mean you were a downer, that was far from the truth. You were actually a fairly bubbly person yourself, you didn't need mystical beings to make that happen.
Back to Jamie; he insisted that you two go hang out at the park with his friends. As soon as you two got there his friends were already in the middle of having a snowball fight. Jamie ran off to play with his friends as you sat on a snowy bench under a tree to watch them play around in the snow.
You huddled into your warm winter clothes and sat back, watching the kids pelt each other with snowballs. It almost seemed as the kids weren't even making the snowballs, they were just finding them. You toss away that silly thought when Jamie waves you over to play but you smile and shake your head.
The kids all pout and look at you with puppy eyes. "That doesn't work on me," you smile at them. They look at each other, most likely trying to figure out how to get you to play along with them.
They seem to look just above your head for a moment and smile. They all giggle which confuses you slightly. Suddenly, a pile of snow drops from the tree branch above you on top of you. You are angry for a second but then a playful, happy feeling takes over. The kids, on the other hand, laugh so hard their faces are practically red.
You smirk. "Oh you think that's funny huh?" you laugh. "Laugh at this!" you shout as you begin to throw snowballs at the kids. You were playing for what felt like hours, throwing snowballs back and forth and dodging behind makeshift snow forts for cover. The sun begins to set by the time that all of you are tuckered out and decide to stop.
Jamie's friends decide that it is time to go home and wave their friend goodbye. Jamie waves back and looks to you.
"Wasn't that fun, (y/n)?" he asks with a big smile.
You nod in agreement and shove a pile of snow in the kid's face. He laughs and looks behind you for a moment. You look back and there is no one there.
"What are you looking at Jamie?" you ask.
"(y/n)?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you believe in Jack Frost?" he says quietly, knowing that the question sounds insane to you.
"Well, I don't mean to burst your bubble but, no I don't. I mean, it's hard when the facts right there. Snow is a seasonal thing, no one being can make it." you say feeling sad that you might crush the kid's heart. He has to learn somehow.
You feel a sudden cold breeze from behind you and shiver.
Jamie looks at you with a glint of hope in his eyes, desperate to make you believe. "I don't understand (y/n), you are on of the most imaginative people I know! Always coming up with different stories to tell Sophie every night, you make the characters so believable with every detail," he says almost sound desperate for you to believe.
