Evan Mathews

"Ugghh" I groan, rolling over and hitting the snooze button on my alarm clock. I doze off for what seems like a few minutes and suddenly, I look over and see that my clock says it's 8:43 a.m.

"Shit!" I exclaim, jumping out of bed. School starts at 9:00 and if I get another tardy, I get detention. I quickly throw on some jeans and a hoodie and run downstairs.

"See ya, Mia!" I yell to my younger sister as I run out the door. I start my car and drive to school, praying there's no traffic. I get to school at 9:08 and attempt to sneak into my english class. Just when I think I've slipped by without my teacher noticing, he turns around and smiles at me.

"Ah Evan, so glad you could join us today" he says as he slips a detention slip on my desk. Great. Such a fabulous start to the day. Whatever, all I really care about is finding Tabitha.

I manage to sit through my first four periods then the bell finally goes off, signaling the start of lunch. I walk over to my locker and shove my books inside while searching the hallways for Tabitha, no sign of her. I check the cafeteria and I can't find her. I'm about to give up when I realize she's probably in her favorite place, the library. I walk in and find her sitting in the back next to a pile of books. I smile to myself, walking over to her. I sit down next to her and pick up a book from the stack, it's a romance novel, what she refers to as her "guilty pleasures".

"What are you doing in here?" I ask, flipping through the pages of the book.

"Oh you know, the usual" she brushes her hair behind her ear and starts to count the books in her stack. "Figured I would borrow a few books to read over spring break".

"A few?" I chuckle, "why not just check out the whole library?"

"Shut up" she laughs and punches me playfully on the arm.

"Sorry, I actually think it's really cute how you like to read so much."

She smiles and starts to stand up, grabbing as many books as she can. I reach down and pick up the remainding books and follow her to the front of the library. After checking out the books we walk over to her locker to drop them off there.

"So what do you want to do now?" she says, turning towards me.

"I don't know, whatever you want to do"

"Okay" she says, grabbing my hand and pulling me outside. We sit down under a big shady tree. "I have something to tell you" she says, facing me. "It's kind of important and I wish it wasn't true, but it is". I become concerned, especially because of how upset she looks.

"My dad-" she sighs, "my dad is getting married. To Jennifer, you know, his girlfriend who hates my guts". I must look shocked because she just stares at me and nods. She starts to tear up. "As if my life wasn't already bad enough. My dad knows that I hate her, but he has no idea what she's done to me. She's yelled at me, abused me, and she's trying to replace my mother! It's just so hard, seeing him with someone else because I miss my mom so much." She uses the sleeve of her sweater to wipe the tears from her eyes. I scoot closer to her and put my arm around her.

"Everything's going to be okay" I whisper to her, playing with one of her curls. "Have you talked to your dad?"

"Yes, and he doesn't believe anything I tell him. He says that he can never trust me again after what I did. But the funny thing is that Connor feels the same way about her, he's just too nice to ruin my dad's relationship".

"Maybe things will turn out for the better, Tabs. Maybe she won't be so bad, after all. I know that she could never replace your mother, but maybe you should give her a chance as your stepmom?"

"You're right" she says, looking up at me. "You're always right, I guess I will just give her a chance".

"Good" I say as I pull her in for a hug.

"Thanks Ev, you're the best". I stand up and help her up as we walk back into the school. "Well I guess I better head to history, see you later" she says as she stands on her tiptoes to kiss me on the cheek. "Thanks again". She turns and walks away, turning around to look back at me and smile when she's halfway down the hallway.

I get to my pre-cal class and open my textbook. I try to focus on the lesson, but all I can think about is Tabitha. Her beautiful green eyes, her gorgeous smile, her adorable clumsiness, I just can't get over how perfect she is. But she's broken and I want to help heal her back into that happy, confident girl that I met freshman year. I decide to stop by her house later that night to cheer her up.

"Mr. Mathews, would you mind solving this problem on the board for me?" my teacher says, looking at me pointedly.

"Uh sure" I say as I walk up to put my work on the whiteboard.

"Wrong! Please pay more attention next time, Mr. Mathews. You may take your seat." I roll my eyes as I walk back over to my seat and sit down. I can't wait for this day to be over.
