Elsewhere on the other side of the village there lived a widowed old man and his 3 daughters.
The youngest of the 3 was very small, weak, and often I'll. But this didn't stop the 2 oldest
from treating her with great cruelty. The second sister was somewhat kinder, and sometimes
stood up for her younger sister. But the eldest sister would hack her hair with a knife and burn
her face and body with HOT coal. Eventually her whole body was scarred with the marks, so
that people called her Oochigeaskw, the rough face girl.
When her father would return from his day he would ask why his child was so disfigured, and
her sister would lie and say that she was clumsy and it was her fault why her body was so
disfigured. Being weak she would not say anything because she was scared. The father would
shake his head and ask what has come over his youngest daughter.
